The European Championship has not been a successful hunting ground for the England international team. After not entering in 1960, they only qualified for one of the next four tournaments, and that semi-final showing in Italy in 1968 remains their best performance. From 1980 to 2004 they qualified for six of the seven tournaments, but failed to get past the group stage in 1980, 1988 and 1992.

In 1996 England hosted the tournament, where "football came home," and Terry Venables' team beat Scotland, Holland and Spain but fell to old rivals Germany in a semi-final penalty shoot-out. Another group stage exit followed in 2000 before Portugal knocked them out at the quarter-final stage in 2004.

Failure to qualify for the 2008 tournament caused widespread distress and cost manager Steve McClaren his job. The FA turned to Italian Fabio Capello, who took the team to the World Cup last 16 in 2010 before their progress was once again ended by the Germans. Capello was due for another crack at a major tournament but it was all too much and his resignation, four months before the tournament, had the air of a desired divorce on both sides.

The FA took their time in anointing a successor, and despite the public clamour for Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp it was the much-travelled Roy Hodgson who emerged as their favoured candidate, and he was appointed just five weeks before the start of the tournament. Hodgson's vast experience at both club and international level will serve him well, but the job as England boss is anything but a tea party as the combination of rapacious fans, a doubting press and big-time Charlie players can quickly turn things sour.

England qualified for Euro 2012 by winning a group that included Switzerland, Bulgaria, Montenegro and Wales, with five wins and three draws from the eight matches. Wayne Rooney, Darren Bent, Ashley Young and Jermain Defoe each scored three goals in their total tally of 17.

The current Euro 2012 betting odds have England as 10/1 fourth favourites to win their first international tournament since 1966.
