As the Ballon d'Or shortlist is announced today, the bookies believe the Argentine may be outside the top three for the first time.
Since the FIFA World Player of the Year award was rebranded as the Ballon d’Or in 2010, Lionel Messi has won on four occasions and been runner-up on the other two. However, the bookmakers have put Messi in joint third-place for the award this time around.
Portugal’s Euro 2016 heroics make Cristiano Ronaldo the clear favourite at best-price 1/5. Whilst first-place seems to be a foregone conclusion, there are three standout names competing for second and third spots. Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann is behind Ronaldo at 7/1. The Frenchman enjoyed a prolific year for both club and country, the highlight of which saw him claim the Euro 2016 Golden Boot.
A stellar year at Barcelona alongside Messi sees Luis Suarez, like Messi, best-price 8/1 to claim his first Ballon d’Or. Since the start of the 2015/16 season, Suarez has scored a ridiculous 69 goals in all competitions in just 66 appearances. What’s more, he seems to be the people’s choice as he’s currently leading our Twitter poll.
