Sepang Track Info
- First held in 1999, the Malaysian Grand Prix is hosted by the Sepang International Circuit in Sepang, Malaysia, approximately 60km south of the capital city Kuala Lumpur.
- The circuit was designed by serial F1-track designer Hermann Tilke. The German designer is also responsible for many other of the 'new' tracks including Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and Turkey.
- Eddie Irvine won the inaugural race in 1999 and both Schumacher brothers, Raikkonen, Alonso and Button have all tasted victory, while Sebastian Vettel has won the last two races. 2008 Drivers' Champion Lewis Hamilton has been off target in his five trips to Sepang with only one podium finish to his name.
- In 2008 it was agreed the Malaysian Grand Prix would become a night race, better to accomodate European television viewing. However organizers backtracked on this and it is now held in the late afternoon/early evening, though the 2009 running was abandoned after 31 laps due to torrential rain.
