Clearly LVG’s philosophy wasn’t all it was cracked up to be and, despite only confirming the sacking of the Dutchman on Monday night, Ed Woodward and co seem to be on the verge of agreeing terms with José Mourinho.

The self-proclaimed ‘special one’ has won the league in his second season at every club he has managed and did so too in his first seasons at Porto, Chelsea (in his first spell) and Inter Milan.

United fans will be hoping he can repeat this feat when he takes charge of the club, but this is the weakest squad he has inherited.

Aside from success, we can expect a flurry of transfer activity and you’d expect the board to back him to the moon this summer. But who might he sign?

Ever since the word Mourinho was uttered, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been dragged through the rumour mill and the bookies have him priced at 1/3 to be reunited with José at Old Trafford.

In terms of other attacking options, Romelu Lukaku’s name has been thrown about but Mourinho didn’t trust him at Chelsea and this option seems unlikely to me. At 11/1, it seems the bookies would agree.

Could Harry Kane be tempted with a move to Old Trafford? He’s 5/1 to leave Tottenham this summer.

A reunion with either Karim Benzema (16/1) or James Rodriguez are other possibilities.

With Daley Blind filling in at centre-back this season, there’s no doubt Mourinho will look to strengthen at the back.

Despite a poor season under Martinez at Everton, John Stones will be on the radar of a number of Premier League clubs and having already tried to sign him at Chelsea, it’s clear that Mourinho is an admirer. Get 3/1 on Man Utd to be his next club.

An alternative at the heart of defence is Raphaël Varane. He was a favourite during Jose’s time at Real Madrid and is widely regarded as one of the best young defenders in the world.

It will also be interesting to see who Mourinho keeps hold of and who gets the chop. Good luck Juan Mata.
