The last live A League clash of the weekend could prove a cagey affair.
Newcastle Jets v Adelaide United - Sunday 07:00, BT Sport 2
The Jets have had a busy summer, with new owners taking over to ease their financial concerns, but they’ve also changed their manager just a couple of weeks before the start of the season, with Mark Jones being handed his first role as head coach and with the signing of several young players, the Jets appear to be looking to the future after a disappointing few years. Adelaide, meanwhile, look to have a tough task defending their title as several of their stars have left and they’ll also have to cope with the Champions League this season.
The Jets were W4-D3-L7 at home last term but they proved competitive as just two of their defeats were by more than one goal. Indeed, they managed to hold Adelaide to a goalless draw and their games at home to the top teams tended to be tight as three of their four against top-three sides saw fewer than three goals, while the first half was goalless in five of their eight home games against top-half teams.
Adelaide picked up just three points from their first eight games last term to leave them bottom of the division, but 14 wins in their next 19 saw them surge up the table. They lost their opening four road games, but had a W7-D3-L0 record after that, with clean sheets in seven of these games. They kept a clean sheet in four of their five trips to bottom-half sides after that slow start and given the Jets’ ‘unders’ trend when hosting the top teams, largely due to their lack of goals, we’re backing at least one team to fail to score in what could prove a cagey affair, much like their meeting last season.
