Snap up the 13/8 about a Tykes win at Oakwell on Saturday afternoon.
Barnsley v Wigan - Saturday 15:00
Paul Heckingbottom has taken a more pragmatic approach in his attempts to revive Barnsley’s season in recent weeks. The promoted Tykes started the campaign riding the crest of a wave, believing they could outgun almost anybody. Slowly but surely, though, reality started to bite as opponents worked them out and a young team gradually started to lose their discipline.
So it was back to the drawing board for Heckingbottom and the approach now is rather less gung-ho. The Yorkshire club went into the break three games unbeaten, including clean sheets in successive away games at Brentford and Burton. If they maintain those standards here, then odds of 13/8 about the home win against ought to be snapped up.
The problem for Warren Joyce isn’t discipline, it’s ingenuity. Wigan had all their creative juices sucked out of them in the final days of Gary Caldwell’s reign as the rigid nature of his philosophy presented them with few opportunities to express themselves. It wasn’t too dissimilar to the problems facing Manchester United players under Louis van Gaal last season.
For Joyce, it’s not so simple as introducing a new system to inspire the players. Confidence is low and some habits are too ingrained for those players to just forget everything and play with freedom. So long as the hosts keep their discipline, they should be able to make a routine afternoon of this. Back the Barnsley 2-0 correct score at 13/1.
