A stalemate could on the cards in Saturday's Championship clash in Cardiff.
Cardiff v Huddersfield - Saturday 15:00
No team more than Huddersfield needed the latest international break to regroup. The Terriers were top of the table and cruising along nicely after 11 matches but, as many predicted, the punishing Championship schedule has started to take its toll on a team that prides itself on its high-energy endeavours without the ball.
The last five matches have delivered just four points with the 5-0 mauling at Fulham raising serious doubts about the staying power of David Wagner’s men. They remain third in the table but the top two have started to cut loose and the Terriers are now closer to tenth than they are to second. Victory for Brighton on Friday night would leave them eight points adrift.
So the focus ought to shift. Rather than setting themselves up for disappointment in a forlorn pursuit of those automatic places, the onus should be on playing the long game and protecting their position in the top six. Either way, with Cardiff at home, the shot data suggests there is nothing between these two teams at the moment. Back the draw at 23/10.
The Bluebirds have their own position to consolidate. They climbed out of the bottom three with seven points from Neil Warnock’s first three matches but a 1-0 defeat to Wigan in their last home game was a jolt to the system and a reminder that defeats upset confidence. Ultimately, this might be a game where the priority for both sides is not to lose.
