The Magpies look worth a bet in Sunday's FA Cup first-round clash with Boreham Wood.
Boreham Wood v Notts County - Sunday 14:00
Notts County made headline news in last season’s FA Cup first round, crashing out to seventh-tier Salford City on the BBC. John Sheridan, who vividly remembers watching the game on telly, will be determined to ensure there is no repeat. The team he fields at Meadow Park will bear little resemblence but the memory of that horror show remains part of the collective conscience.
The Magpies head to Hertfordshire frustrated by their league form. Sitting sixth, their overall position doesn’t look too bad, but a record of only one win in seven at home leaves them 13 points off the title pace and five points adrift of third-placed Doncaster. Look down five points and you reach Morecambe in 18th place. Looking at their personnel, they should be doing better.
But the inconsistencies that arguably stem from Sheridan’s sometimes ambiguous motivational approach shouldn’t be a problem here. The competition does all the talking and the prospect of a third round clash against Premier League opposition is much more achievable aim for Notts than most teams involved at this stage. Take the 6/4 available on the away win.
Boreham Wood suffered a lesser embarrassment 12 months ago, dumped out on home soil by Level 8 side Northwich Victoria when it seemed like they only had to turn up and claim a first appearance in the second round since 1997. They were shorter than 1/2 for that replay, with a trip to Northampton the prize. But the occasion proved too much then, as it might do here.
