Copa Del Rey winners Sevilla look a good bet to topple the Spanish champions
Sevilla v Barcelona
Cup specialists Sevilla won the Europa League last term for the third season in a row and were also runners-up in the Copa del Rey and as a result they face Barca in the Super Cup here, hosting the first leg before travelling to the Nou Camp on Wednesday night. Sevilla have once again been pillaged over the summer with their manager Unai Emery joining PSG and arguably their best player Krychowiak following him, whilst last season’s top scorer Gameiro has joined Atletico. It’s been a much more stable summer for Barca, who’ve made some shrewd additions to their squad and are looking to win their 12th Supercopa, but their first since 2013.
Given the level of upheaval for Los Rojiblancos, it’s somewhat surprising that they’ve been in excellent form in pre-season, winning all six of their fixtures under new manager Jorge Sampaoli until Tuesday night's defeat to Real Madrid. Barca, on the other hand, were thumped 4-0 by Liverpool at Wembley last weekend and are perhaps missing the presence of Neymar, who is busy playing out 0-0’s in front of booing fans at the Olympics.
With that in mind and since Barca haven’t won at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium in the last couple of seasons, it’s certainly worth taking them on at odds-on. Indeed, Sevilla tend to be a superb home side and only the top three in Spain had better home records last season as they went on a run of 13 straight wins in the league at one point. That combined with their superb pedigree in cup competitions means we’re siding with them to get a result.
