The top two in League One go head to head at Gigg Lane on Saturday and the obvious value lies with Bury to secure an all important victory.
David Flitcroft admitted the better team lost following Bury’s 3-1 win at MK Dons in midweek but don’t let that alter your impression of the Shakers too much - only Scunthorpe can claim to have had a better start to the season. As far as the top three goes, the order of the League One table is supported completely by the shot data.
So second entertains first at Gigg Lane and while the Iron aren’t going short of recognition for their stunning exploits, the hosts clearly haven’t convinced the layers by the 90-minute prices here. Bury should be neck and neck for favouritism at the very least. My ratings make them 11/8 favourites, so take the 2/1 available on the home win.
Neither side has tested themselves against the very best yet. Scunthorpe have played Charlton and Sheffield United at home, both games finishing level, while further points have been dropped at Port Vale and Fleetwood. Bury beat Charlton 2-0 on the opening day, although the Addicks players were relative strangers at that stage.
However, the smash-and-grab success at stadium:mk was a fifth straight win for the Lancashire club, whereas you have to go back to August 20th for the last time Scunthorpe beat opposition outside the bottom six. Similar to midweek, the Shakers can grab the opener and box clever from thereon. Bury -1 on the handicap at 5/1 or better is also a bet worth having.
