Slovenia v England - Tuesday 19:45, ITV1

Gareth Southgate started his reign as interim England manager with a comfortable 2-0 victory over minnows Malta on Saturday. They’re likely to face a much sterner test in Slovenia, especially with the hosts coming off the back of a deserved 1-0 victory over Slovakia on Saturday.

Once again Rooney was the hot topic following a lacklustre display in a deep midfield role and the captain looks set to be dropped from the starting line-up. Eric Dier coming back will mean Dele Alli can push further forward, which should help when it comes to breaking Slovenia down in the final third. It’s also worth noting that the last time Rooney failed to start, the Three Lions put three past the Germans in one of their best performances in a long time, with Alli one of the stars of the show.

Slovenia are a side that are rarely involved in open games as 10 of their last 11 have had fewer than three goals, including their last six at home. However, England have won 13 consecutive qualification matches, of which 10 were by two or more goals. As Man Utd did, we fancy England to come out a much stronger side without Rooney so we’ll back them to cover the -1 handicap.
