ARTSY (best price 9/2) hadn’t done too much to set the world alight in three maidens but looked a totally different proposition on handicap debut off a bargain basement mark and should be followed to repeat the dose of his Chelmsford win. On a night when there was a huge track bias favouring those that raced on the speed, Roger Varian’s charge was the only one to swim against the tide and win from coming off the pace, so it’s safe to assume he clearly had plenty in hand of the official assessor in order to accomplish such a feat. Despite a 7lb penalty, therefore, he still should be sufficiently well treated to overcome the switch in surfaces and he rates a fair each-way bet looking at some of his early quotes.

Although it’s never a good policy in the long term to jump on to the bandwagon of a horse that’s already racked up a hat trick (funerals and weddings and all that…), there is evidence to believe BULLETPROOF'S (best price 3/1) winning run hasn’t finished yet. The son of Wareed started the ball rolling by scoring with some ease at Newton Abbot and he quickly followed up that success back at the same track under an 8lb penalty 10 days later. A further 7lb failed to derail Ken Cunningham-Brown’s inmate on his latest outing over today’s C&D as he brushed aside nine opponents with the minimum fuss and with his winning time over three seconds quicker than the 130-rated Abidjan, those findings suggests the in-form nine-year-old may still have a bit left up his sleeve in this grade.

DUCHY (nap) (best price 6/1) shaped with a huge amount of promise on debut at Newmarket and will hopefully put that vital experience she gained to good use in this similar affair. Held up out the back door at HQ, Michael Bell’s charge found herself in an uncompromising position going past the bushes with two furlongs to run, but staying on strongly up the hill, she gave out clear signals that she may have been involved in the finish with a more aggressive ride. Looking the type to come on significantly for the run both mentally and physically, the daughter of Kyllachy can be backed with a degree of confidence to justify those beliefs.
