Connections of MAXIMISER (best price 9/2) reportedly turned down big money offers for their pride-and-joy during the off-season and their loyalty appears to have been well and truly justified based on his chasing debut at Carlisle last month. Jumping supremely well throughout, Simon West’s charge just failed narrowly to fend off the persistent challenge of Silsol in the latter stages, but with the pair pulling nicely clear of the very smart hurdler, Seeyouatmidnight, the form looked totally believable. Indeed, the time of the race at the Yorkshire venue backed up that view and with the winner also going on to advertise the performance level of the front two with a gutsy win at Haydock last week, the son of Hellisio should in no way be underestimated by his southern counterparts.

All eyes will undoubtedly be on Champion Bumper third, Wait For Me, on his hurdling debut, but having run well against Philip Hobbs’ potential star in hot bumper at Ascot, there’s no way WEST APPROACH (best price 16/1) should be available to back at ten times the price. Set an almighty task in what turned out to be a slowly run affair at the Berkshire venue, Colin Tizzard’s inmate deserves a good deal of credit for finishing as close as he did after being last turning into the home straight and although it’s highly debatable he would have beaten the winner, the margin of defeat would have been greatly reduced with a more positive ride. Prior to that excellent effort, the son of Westerner had shown great determination and stamina to out-stay the useful pair, King Kayf and Might Bite on testing ground over today’s course, so providing he can put in a decent round of jumping on hurdling debut, he has more going for him than his 20/1 quotes imply.

AIR OF YORK (NAP) (best price 7/4) hit the ball clean out of the park on the figures at Southwell three days ago and looks set to continue his fine work under the guidance of his new trainer David Evans. Since joining the Pandy handler, the son of Vale Of York hasn’t looked back and on the evidence of his scintillating performance at the Nottinghamshire track the other day, there could be plenty more to come from this in-form sprinter. Not only be he post the quickest overall time on the seven-race card, he clocked a tremendous 36.9 final three-furlong sectional which was also by far and away the best performance of the day. Having run well over an inadequate trip the time before at tonight’s venue, any worries of him not transferring that form to a different surface are quashed and even under a statutory 6lb penalty, he still looks well in against tonight’s field.
Air Of York - 2pt @ 7/4

WINK OLIVER (best price 5/2) was clearly swimming against the tide trying to put a fork into the bang in-form Seychelloise’s boat on his last visit to tonight’s track, but without that sort of opposition in attendance on this occasion, David Dennis’ inmate rates a decent bet to regain the winning thread. Prior to that sound effort here six days ago, the son of Winker Watson came from a long way back to score in decent style in a similar contest at Chelmsford and providing he can escape cleanly from the gates, the in-form three-year-old can prove too strong for his seven rivals late on.

RED RANNAGH (best price 9/2) left the impression he was a good bit better than the bare result suggested over tonight’s course last time and he is strongly fancied to make amends returning to the scene of that debacle. Having run an astonishing race for a 100/1 poke in a hot maiden at the Curragh the time before, it was no great surprise to find him a warm order to claim what appeared to be a much weaker race on paper on his all-weather debut. Unfortunately, everything that could have gone wrong did go wrong for the son of Teofilio and his supporters were left to agonise over what might have been had he obtained anything like a clear run. Providing he receives a smoother passage this time around, this imposing, long-striding sort should be good enough to dispel the bad memories of that previous encounter.
