The time figure that ARCHAIC (NAP) (best price 6/4) recorded when winning at Wolverhampton last time out suggests the handicapper has given him a big chance of following up on his first start in nursery company. The boost that theory, both the fourth and fifth home that day, Outback Blue and Vroom, have gone on to post decent victories subsequently and with the promise of more to come, Charlie Appleby’s charge should go a long way to following suit if handling the slightly shaper nature of this track.

Time may tell that FRIENDLY ROYAL (best price 9/4) faced an impossible task trying to lock horns with the potentially useful April Dusk at Uttoxeter last time out, but with a big gap back to the third, just a three pound subsequent rise in the ratings may not be enough to prevent Sue Smith’s charge getting back on the winning trail. A real died-in-the-wool stayer typical of the yard, the son of Royal Anthem should therefore be well suited by the demands of this galloping track and he can provide his in-form stable with another winner at one of their happy hunting grounds.

It may have appeared at the time only a modest maiden hurdle that NANSAROY (best price 11/8) claimed at Chepstow back in November, but the speed figure and the subsequent performance of the runner-up that day, Never Equalled, point towards the race being a little more substantial than it first appeared. The fact that the front pair pulled 24 lengths clear of the rest immediately suggested we were dealing with an above-average affair for the track and with Evan Williams’ charge proving for the second time that he’s at his best when given a searching examination on testing ground, the conditions at the Lancashire venue tomorrow should ensure he is very much in his element.

One win in 26 starts suggests SERAPHIMA (best price 16/1) isn’t the most reliable of betting propositions, but there were indications from her performance here 12 days ago that she might be capable of adding to that modest tally at some stage in the near future. Finishing off her race in eye-catching fashion from the back of the field, Lisa Williamson’s charge gave signal that she has to be a consideration when returning to a more suitable trip and being as her only career victory came over the C&D at a similar time year, it wouldn’t be the biggest mythical in the world if she were to repeat the dose at this bargain-basement level.
