Rory Jiwani picks out his best bets from the opening second round matches.
Well, I certainly hope things are going to turn for the better after a pretty dismal opening round. We had a couple of near misses but we need to start hitting the target sharpish.
Rain on Tuesday means there are quite a few first round matches to be completed. There aren’t too bets jumping out at me in the second round games due to start on Wednesday although I think Adrian Mannarino is capable of giving Novak Djokovic a bit of a scare. The Frenchman made surprisingly short work of Kyle Edmund and it might take the world number one a little time to get to grips with his lefty serve. While I can’t see Djokovic losing, I’m going to have a small play on Mannarino to win the opening set.
On the women’s side, Garbine Muguruza came through a tough opener against Camila Giorgi but she should find things far easier against Jana Cepelova. The Spaniard will be a bit more used to the grass now and she can make light work of an opponent ranked outside the top 100, even if she did stun Simona Halep here 12 months ago.
I think Kirsten Flipkens is a big price to spring a surprise against Madison Keys. The Belgian, who is capable of throwing in the odd absolute shocker, showed she is in pretty good nick with a comfortable win over Nicole Gibbs in the first round. On her day, she is a very fine grass court player as demonstrated by her run to the semi-finals three years ago. Keys might be in for an extended run but Flipkens has plenty in her armoury including serve-volley and this could be a very interesting encounter.
