Australian Grand Prix History

The Australian Grand Prix is one of the oldest races in motor racing, beginning in 1928 for the first meet at Philip Island. The event was added to the Formula One Drivers’ Championship in 1985, with Keke Rosberg winning the inaugural race in Adelaide. The Adelaide Street Circuit was the venue for the race for ten years before its move to Melbourne. It has been the site of the first race of the Formula One season since 1996, except for the 2006 and 2010 campaigns. Lex Davison and Michael Schumacher hold the record for most wins in the race, although the former’s triumphs came before the event was added to the Formula One calendar.

Australian Grand Prix Format

The Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit is 5.303 km (3.295 mi), which means the drivers will travel 307.574 km (191.071 mi) in the 58 laps of the race.

Australian Grand Prix Trophy

The winner of the race receives 25 points in the race for the Drivers’ Championship crown as well as the Jack Brabham trophy. Second place receives 18, while third notches 15 points. Fourth collects 12 then it descends down in multiples of two before tenth place receives a single point.

Australian Grand Prix Betting

There are several markets available for the race. Before the start of the race, there will be a market open for the fastest cars during practice and qualifying – and most importantly, which driver claims pole position on the grid. The race markets begin with the winner of the meet, and also include which drivers finish in the top three. There will also be markets for the fastest lap in the meet and the distance of victory by the winner – measured in seconds. Prop bets can include the deployment of the safety car and how many cars are ruled out of the contest due to technical issues or a collision.

Australian Grand Prix Betting Tips

The obvious contender for the win is Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton. The Brit won the Drivers’ Championship crown by a comfortable margin last season. He will be aiming to get off to a winning start in Melbourne, although victory in Australia has eluded him for the past two seasons. Hamilton will be keen to lead from the off this around, having trailed his rival Sebastian Vettel after the German’s strong start to the last campaign. Vettel has a strong record in the race, putting forward a fine outing last time out to stun Mercedes’ Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas. The 29-year-old allowed the Brit to take control of the title in 2017 after making a bright start. Vettel will be eyeing a repeat success from his triumph in 2017. Bottas could be the wildcard after his strong end to the 2017 season, winning the final race of the campaign. At the least, he should be on course for a podium, but the Finn will be eyeing the victory to prove that he can challenge Hamilton at the top. However, the first race of the term is anything, but predictable.
