Champagne Stakes Betting

The Group One Champagne Stakes is run at set weights over the famous Royal Randwick mile and, preceded by the Golden Slipper and Sires’ Produce, is the last leg of the two-year-old Triple Crown.

Held annually by the Australian Turf Club, the 1600 metre juvenile affair is worth $500,000 with first place awarded $287,000, second place $94,000, third place $49,500 and continues to pay out to tenth (10th) place.

Dating back to 1864, when first run over eight furlongs (approximately 1600 metres), the elite affair has been run over varying distances but has always held top billing and has always been named the ‘Champagne Stakes’.

Baguette (1970), Luskin Star (1977), Tierce (1991), Burst (1992), Dance Hero (2004) and Pierro (2012) are feature winners of not only the Champagne but also the Australian two-year-old Triple Crown.

1933 Melbourne Cup winner Hall Mark won the Champagne earlier that year before phenomenon Ajax made the then six-furlong race one of his 33 Principal Stakes wins, in 1937. Other greats including Todman, Sky High, Vain, Red Anchor, Triscay, Intergaze and Encounter boast their names on the highly esteemed honour roll.

Noted trainer of juveniles Gai Waterhouse has claimed the race on five occasions with Assertive Lad, Hasna, Dance Hero, Meurice and Pierro. While, megastar Kiwi hoop Raymond Shane Dye won the race six times with his last success in the race coming aboard Waterhouse’s first, Assertive Lad.
