Cox Plate Betting

The Cox Plate is a race conducted by the Moonee Valley Racing Club over 2040 metres. The race is commonly known as the ‘weigh-for-age championship of Australasia’. Moonee Valley in Melbourne, Australia is the venue for the Cox Plate that has been run since 1922.

Total prize money for the Cox Plate is now a record $5million with $3million going to the winner. Prizemoney is paid all the way down to tenth (10th).

The race itself is comprised of horses invited by the MVRC (Moonee Valley Racing Club) and is strictly by invitation only.

Winx is the all-time leader in race wins for the Cox Plate having won the past four editions of the race. Prior to her dominance from 2015 to 2018, only Kingston Town had won three Cox Plates (1980-1982).

Legends of the turf are littered amongst the names on the honour roll including Phar Lap (1930, ’31), Tulloch (1960), Tobin Bronze (1966, ’67), Gunsynd (1972), Bonecrusher (1986), Octagonal (1995), Sunline (1999, 2000), Northerly (2001, ’02) and So You Think (2009, ’10).

Shamus Award won the 2013 edition as a maiden galloper.

The legendary Tommy ‘T.J’ Smith holds the record for most wins by a trainer with seven while Darby Munro has five wins as a jockey which is the benchmark. Chris Waller and Hugh Bowman combined to win four straight Cox Plates while Brent Thomson won the race four times on four different horses in five years – Fury’s Order, Family Of Man, So Called and Dulcify.
