Winterbottom Stakes Betting

Registered as a Group One by the Western Australian Turf Club, the Winterbottom Stakes was upgraded to top billing in 2011 but remained at weight-for-age conditions. Since inception in 1952, the race had always been a Principal race run at 1400 metres before settling at 1200 metres in 1993, becoming Western Australia’s premier sprint race.

At $1million prize money, horses all the way down to tenth (10th) place get a slice of the lucrative prize purse. Third place receives $90,000 and second place collects $200,000 while winning connections lay claim to $590,000.

Of The Masters, spanning three Saturdays from the end of November to the beginning of December, the Winterbottom takes place on the middle Saturday between the two other Group Ones, the Railway Stakes and the Kingston Town Classic.

As a Group Two it has been won by greats of the turf like Raconteur, Nicopolis, La Trice, Placid Ark, Miss Andretti, and Takeover Target. Buffering is the only horse that can lay claim to winning the race twice as a Group One (2013 & 2015).

The Winterbottom has connections with globetrotting superstars having been won by Miss Andretti, Takeover Target, Ortensia (twice) and Buffering which all have international feature race wins attached to their respective CVs.

As a Group One, Damian Browne and Robert Heathcote combined twice to win the Winterbottom with Buffering in 2013 and 2015. Jason Brown and Jim Taylor have also combined to win the race twice a Group One but with two different horses - Barakey in 2012 and Magnifisio in 2014.
