Black book - the weekend watch list

An international with possible Everest ambitions, a regally bred mare and a filly on the rise make their way into our black book this week.

Krone – Caulfield Race 6: 4th ($14): It was difficult to miss the run of this filly on Saturday, but for all the wrong reasons. After an improved parade, she was slightly slow away, settling midfield with cover. The cover didn’t last too long as Prebble shifted out on his mount nearing the 800m mark hampering Krone significantly and forcing her 5 wide with no tow into the race.

Despite the torrid run she hit the line strongly in 34.72s for the final 600m and 12.01s for the final 200m – indicative of the work she was made to do mid-race. This tough run will bring her on perfectly to tackle a mile next start.

Record: 7:1-2-3

Possible Targets: Thousand Guineas

Jungle Cat – Caulfield Race 8: 1st ($13): How did a last start Group 1 winner who’s undefeated in 2018 go around at $13? Nothing to look at in the yard, the 7yo is undoubtedly in career-best form, notching up his 4th successive win with the last two at the top level. The race did shape up nicely for him courtesy of a solid midrace tempo but he was very tough to the line.

The final furlong times are concerning with most gallopers struggling to break 13s. However, if Jungle Cat is to secure the final Everest slot he will relish the drop back to a fast 1200m without the concern of blowing late.

Record: 31:8-9-3

Possible Targets: The Everest

Shumookh – Rosehill Race 6: 1st ($6): The impeccably bred daughter of Dream Ahead has hit the ground running as a mare, taking out the Golden Pendant in gutsy style. She paraded with plenty of improvement to come and as Champagne Cuddles ambled up to her in the straight it looked all over. However, she never gave in, kicking back on the inside after being headed to claim the Group 2 event.

She’s beaten plenty of good mares here (many who were surprisingly forward) and has a stack of upside being a lightly raced on-speed type. She has the potential to really stand up and be counted this Spring, a big mile race looking a likely target.

Record: 7:2-3-1

Possible Targets: The Myer Classic

Suggested Bets:

Krone: Suggesting a good bet at the $14* in a Thousand Guineas market still full of question marks.

Jungle Cat: If he had a slot, $15* would be an absolute steal. Having marked him a very similar price to both Redzel and Trapeze Artist he still has to be worth a ticket.

Shumookh: Mapping out campaigns for these progressive mares can be a fickle business, as such only suggesting something very small on her at the $26* for the Myer.
