Melbourne Cup Preview: Do Godolphin finally have the right Solution?
Best Solution storms into Melbourne Cup calculations off the back of brilliant win.
Are Godolphin finally in a position to break their Melbourne Cup hoodoo?
The global thoroughbred powerhouse has won nearly every feature race in the world, however, the Melbourne Cup has been one of those that has eluded them time and time again.
The aptly named Best Solution could be the one to give them victory in Australia’s greatest race following his brilliant victory in last Saturday’s Caulfield Cup. Although the margin was only a nose, it was what he had to do in the run to claim victory that opened the eyes of many.
Trapped four and five-wide early from barrier 15, jockey Pat Cosgrave pushed on and found a spot fourth in the running. The entire was then forced to move early when The Taj Mahal made a lightning move in the back straight. Best Solution went with him and hit the front before the home turn and although he fought off that particular runner, he then had to hold off Underwood winner Homesman in a thrilling finish.
Corporates and most bookmakers scrambled to trim the price of Best Solution after the win, with the general firm up being $26-$9.
That puts him second pick behind Team Williams runner Yucatan, who also own Homesman and The Taj Mahal among others.
Best Solution and Avilius give Godolphin a very strong hand leading into the first Tuesday in November and the former’s trainer (Saeed Bin Suroor) has eyed off the Melbourne Cup with his multiple Group One winner for some time now.
Although Avilius isn’t trained by Bin Suroor, he is prepared by a name synonymous with the Cup – James Cummings. The young trainer is aiming to join his legendary grandfather Bart on the honour roll.
