Counter Strike

Some big money has come today for Cross Counter to win the Lexus Melbourne Cup (3200 metres) tomorrow.

Earlier today, TAB reported that one customer splashed out $50,000 @ $10 on the Charlie Appleby-Kerrin McEvoy runner, which prompted a trim up in price to $9.

That is the biggest bet that they’ve taken so far on any horse to win this year’s great race.

The four-year-old is one of three runners in the Melbourne Cup for the powerful Godolphin stable, with Avilius and Caulfield Cup winner Best Solution also seeing some support today.

Since Saturday night’s barrier draw, the biggest firmer has been Magic Circle. The seven-year-old was installed a $9 chance after coming up with gate 17 and with last year’s Cup-winning jockey Corey Brown aboard, the money began to flow for the pair to the point where he was crunched into as low as $7.50. He is now back out to $8.

Race favourite Yucatan, although still a clear favourite, has gone $4.50-$5.50 since the barrier draw and will need a few things to go his way after coming up with gate 23.
