It was a minor upset in the Group One Kennedy Oaks after Aristia proved the superior staying filly over the 2500 metres.
The Matt Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained filly became the first horse since Kirramosa to complete the Wakeful Stakes / Oaks double, enjoying a good run fourth for most of the trip before being presented for her challenge at the top of the straight.
Jockey Damian Lane hit the go button midway down the running and the daughter of Lohnro did the rest, overpowering the frontrunner Greysful Glamour to score by nearly three-quarters of a length. Aristia, which started around $5.50, was the third favourite and there was spice added to the trifecta when $101 outsider Miner’s Lass filled the minor end of the prize.
Interestingly, the first five horses across the line, with Maracaibo ($61) and Qafila ($13) were the first five in running throughout.
The big disappointments from a betting perspective were race favourite Amphritite ($3) and Verry Elleegant ($5).
Darren Weir’s star fillies failed to run out the 2500 metres and it was particular disappointing for the punters, which sent them out popular elects. Amphitrite was head and shoulders above anything else in terms of money taken, accounting for roughly 40 percent of the investment.
