Racing in review - Brutal day for punters
If yesterday’s racing action was anything to go by then the next two months will be tough going for punters.
Long-priced winners were scattered everywhere including all four major metropolitan tracks while heavily backed commodities were few and far between.
Winter racing is known to be one of the hardest times of the year to find a winner on the punt because of the wet tracks, bias and the rail moving constantly on a weekly basis. You also have to factor in that most of the leading hoops are out of their usual stomping ground either taking some time out or competing interstate or overseas.
Sam Weatherley landed a treble at Rosehill and took riding honours with Dulette ($19), Call Me Royal ($6) and Top Striker ($41) - a handy $4,674 to $1 multi if you follow the young rider! Jenny Duggan came away with a double too on He Ekscels ($19) and River Bird ($2.90) to continue her good form in the saddle.
Weatherley got everything out of Dulette in the TAB Highway after being three-wide the trip but favourite-backers who piled into Mr Wong will be feeling sick after that galloper was also wide in the second half of the field and couldn’t run on. Duggan’s win on He Ekscels saw odds-on favourite So You Win get beaten and with it, the hopes of many multis and the Early Quaddie dashed.
While Call Me Royal’s win wasn’t a total shock the win of Top Striker surprised many but not if you followed SKY Thoroughbred Central’s Lizzie Jelfs, who chose the Greg Hickman runner as her ‘pick of the yard’. A late move saw him go $61 into $41 – nice if you got it!
At Caulfield, we saw Tinkermosa ($61), Tavirun ($13), Miss Iano ($19) and Voila ($9.50) all salute in what was a difficult day for punters although Elite Drake’s win in the last salvaged something as he was heavily supported late.
Debt Collector’s defeat at Morphettville at $1.55 didn’t do much to help punters earlier in the day while Lifetime Quest, trapped three-wide the trip, still powered to the line late at Newcastle as an odds-on elect but $41 outsider Cosmic Reign managed to get the bob down right on the line. Ahhh, what a game!
There were a number of horses you could put into the ‘back me next time’ file including Heart Conquered (Rosehill, Civic Stakes), Sizzlefly (Caulfield, race 1) and Fragonard (Caulfield, race 8) which all endured wide runs and yet secured placings. Niccanova, in the Glasshouse on the Sunny Coast, is another because if it had found clear running 50 metres earlier it may well have won instead of finishing second to River Racer.
RIDE OF THE DAY: Luke Nolen on Smart Elisim. Stuck to the inside when everyone else fanned wide on the final turn. Raced away for an easy win!
FLOP OF THE DAY: Jamaican Rain. Was smashed in betting to win the Glasshouse but after leading was a spent force at the top of the straight.
