TAB has sensationally paid out on the result of the A-league Top Six market despite nine rounds still to be played.

Last night’s 1-1 draw between Newcastle and Wellington was the catalyst for TAB’s decision, with eight points still separating the two teams who are currently in sixth and seventh spots respectively.

Over 3,000 bets featuring singles and multis have been processed and paid out.

“Last night’s result makes it extremely difficult for Newcastle to qualify for the finals now,” TAB’s Andrew Georgiou said.

“Newcastle really needed to beat Wellington last night and if they could have, it would have meant just five points between them with nine rounds remaining.

“That would have been a margin that Ernie Merrick’s men could have realistically overhauled, however, from what we have seen from them throughout the season and the fact Wellington have been a surprise packet this campaign, eight points may be a bridge too far now.

“Add to that, Newcastle’s next three games are against the two Melbourne sides as well as Adelaide and getting maximum points out of those matches looks a big stretch.”

Meanwhile, the A-league winner market could be reshaped after the weekend with a top of the table clash between the Victory and Glory on Sunday. Both sides head TAB’s market at this point and are $3.25 respectively.

TAB ODDS – A-league Winner market

Melbourne Victory $3.25

Perth Glory $3.25

Sydney FC $4

Melbourne City $9

Adelaide United $12

Wellington Phoenix $12

Others from $101
