A mini final and a mouthwatering contest.

The game of the round is at Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon and it shapes as an elimination between two of the most intriguing sides of the competition.

The Bulldogs are looking to return to the finals after a drought breaking premiership last season while Essendon is looking to reward their loyal supporters with a return to finals action.

Both sides have mixed their form this season but both are capable of beating any side in the competition on their day and will be dangerous should they advance to the finals.

The Bombers have produced some of their best footy this season at Etihad Stadium where they have won four games.

Western Bulldogs, on the other hand, have had their struggles this season but showed a return to form last week with a comprehensive 54-point victory.

Popular utility Marcus Bontempelli had 20 valuable disposals last week and Liam Picken stole the show moving forward to boot a game high six goals.

Both these sides enter this clash in arguably the best form that they have shown this season with Essendon having won three straight and the Bulldogs having won their past two.

Zach Merrett has been a sensation again for the Bombers this season and at $31 for the Brownlow he is not the worst bet, although with Dustin Martin and Patrick Dangerfield likely to fight out the finish the $8 on him finishing in the top three does hold more appeal.

Merrett has had 37 and 32 disposals in the past fortnight against St Kilda and North Melbourne and we are again keen on him to rack up the touches. Have a crack at the $2.25 @ Sportsbet for him to have 35 or more.

Essendon has been hard to catch at stages during the season, however, they look to be getting stronger as the year goes on. In what is a vital game we are sticking with Essendon to win a close one.

Zach Merrett has had the most disposals in the Bombers past two matches and there is no reason not to back him again.
