Essendon Bombers 2019 AFL Season Preview & Analysis
Expectations are once again high for the Bombers in 2019, especially after another campaign missing finals. Can they finally take the jump this season?
Finished in 2018: 11th (12 wins, 10 losses)
Key ins: Dylan Shiel (GWS) Joe Daniher (injury)
Draft Picks: Irving Mosquito (#38) Noah Gown (#60) Brayden Ham (#72)
Key outs: Travis Colyer (Fremantle) Brendon Goddard (delisted) Josh Green (delisted) Jackson Merrett (delisted) Matthew Leuenberger (retired)
Coach: John Worsfold
Captain(s): Dyson Heppell
Playing AFLX: Michael Hurley (Flyers) Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti (Deadly) Andrew McGrath (Bolts) Dylan Shiel (Rampage)
Summary: After a host of new faces joined the Bombers in 2018, they targeted just one big fish this off-season and they landed him. Dylan Shiel’s addition to the Essendon midfield looks to be an exciting one for a team on the cusp of finals footy and fans will hope he’s the missing piece to making the jump not only to September action, but for a possible top four push.
The expense of landing Shiel meant the Bombers didn’t pick until #38 in the national draft but have added more pace as well as a likely key position player. Joe Daniher missed the majority of 2018 and will be a welcome addition to the forward line that struggled to have a key focal point.
Round 1: GWS Giants v Essendon – Spotless Stadium – Sunday, 24 March 3:20 PM
Best Brownlow Hope: Dylan Shiel
