Carlton v Richmond – MCG - 7:20PM

For the 12th time in the past 13 years, traditional rivals Carlton and Richmond will open the AFL season at the MCG.

Once again it will be the Tigers who head in as the heavy favourites, with the Tigers looking to continue where they left off last season where they extended their streak to a record 22 consecutive victories at this venue before losing to Collingwood in the preliminary final - their only loss in Victoria for the season.

A new hope has been installed at the Blues with two impressive preseason displays which saw them register a win against Essendon and narrowly fall to last year’s Grand Finalists by under a kick, but more importantly, they unveiled number one draft pick Sam Walsh amongst a host of other young talents who impressed, especially the former.

The Blues could have up to eight new faces in the navy blue for the first time on Thursday night, while boom Tiger recruit Tom Lynch is questionable to line up for his new team but regardless of his availability the Tigers should be able to make it eight straight victories against their fierce rivals.

Key Stat: Richmond have won seven consecutive matches against Carlton

Tip: Richmond
