Collingwood v Geelong – MCG - 7:20PM

After coming within a kick of lifting their 16th premiership, Collingwood will look to put the heartbreak of the last Saturday in September behind them as they open their season against Geelong at the MCG.

The G hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for the Cats who have lost their last five at the venue, with their last win coming against the Pies in Round 8 last season. Geelong stifled the Pies on the day, winning 66-45 in Collingwood’s lowest score of the year by some way. It’s unlikely to be such a dour display this time around with the introduction of the new rules conducive to more free-flowing and hopefully high scoring games.

The Pies will be missing star midfielder Taylor Adams for the contest but welcome back favourite son Dayne Beams into the mix, while Jamie Elliott who’s been restricted to just 17 games over the past three seasons is ready to go. The Cats will likely hand debuts to as many as four kids, which would be the first time since 1974 as they look to win their season opener for a fourth consecutive year.

Key Stat: Collingwood has won 15 of its last 17 matches as a favourite
