AFL Round 2: Saturday Afternoon Match Previews & Betting Tips
The Bombers will be eager to bounce back this week against the Saints while Port Adelaide will be looking to back up their impressive round 1 win when they host the Blues at the Adelaide Oval.
Essendon v St Kilda - Marvel Stadium - 4:35 PM
Having put forth an abysmal display against the Giants to open their season, Essendon will need to find a way to respond when they face St Kilda at Marvel Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Bombers displayed an incredible lack of intent during that 82-point defeat in round 1 seeing them beaten in the contested possession count by 40 as well as being out-tackled despite recording 63 fewer disposals.
It proved a more successful, albeit unconvincing round 1 performance from the Saints, as they overcame the Suns 85-84 at Marvel Stadium. That result moved St Kilda’s record as a favourite since the beginning of last season to 4-2, however, its record as an underdog proves far more troubling. The Saints hold a 1-19-1 W/L/D record from their last 21 such outings, including a 122-79 loss to the Bombers in Round 21 of last season. As such, it may take a similarly listless performance from Essendon to see St Kilda come out on top in this one.
Key Stat: The Saints are 1-19-1 W/L/D since the beginning of last season when starting a match as an underdog
Best bet: Essendon 1-39 at $2.10*
Value bet: Essendon 40-49 at $7.50*
Port Adelaide v Carlton - Adelaide Oval - 5:10 PM
Port Adelaide get a golden chance to build off their brilliant start to the 2019 season when they host the Blues at Adelaide Oval in the other Saturday twilight fixture. The Power couldn’t have been more impressive in defeating the Demons last week, holding last year’s preliminary finalists scoreless in the final term as they ran away with a 26-point victory. Ken Hinkley described the win as the best he’s been a part of at the club - including finals, after his four debutantes all performed admirably, combining for 68 disposals and three goals.
Carlton got jumped early against the Tigers and was held to their lowest ever opening quarter score against their traditional rivals. They recovered to get the margin back to 10 points, kicking eight of their nine goals in the middle quarters before fading late and ultimately losing by 33 points. The Blues have lost their last two games against the Power in Adelaide by a combined 193-points and while we don’t think it will be anywhere near a triple figure belting, the Power should be too strong at home.
Key Stat: 12 of Port Adelaide's last 13 Saturday matches as a home favourite have gone UNDER the total match point lines.
Tip: Port Adelaide
Best bet: Port Adelaide 1 -39 at $2.15*
Value bet: Carlton +34.5/Under 167.5 at $3.40*
