AFL Round 5: Easter Monday Previews & Betting Tips
The traditional Easter Monday blockbuster concludes Round 5 in style as both teams look to bounce back from close losses last week.
Hawthorn v Geelong - MCG - 3:20 PM
The traditional Easter Monday blockbuster brings Round 5 to a close as the Hawks host the Cats at the MCG.
Last year’s match was decided by just one-point with the Hawks prevailing despite kicking fewer goals than the Cats. Hawthorn also won the fixture later in the season, meaning they were able to upset their great rival as an underdog on both occasions. Again they will head in as the underdog with a mounting injury list.
Ben Stratton will have to overcome a concussion he suffered against the Saints, James Cousins will also be touch and go with an ankle injury, while Jaeger O’Meara looks to set to return after being a late withdrawal last week, fresh off signing a four-year contract extension during the week. However, James Frawley will join Liam Shiels and Shaun Burgoyne on the sidelines with a hamstring injury. Patrick Dangerfield escaped suspension for his off the ball incident with Giants tagger Matt De Boer and will be primed to face the Hawks, a team he has dominated against as a Cat.
Barring the near 100-point thumping by the Cats on Easter Monday two years ago, the teams have played extremely tight matches with four of their last five encounters being decided by under two goals, which is in line with their amazing rivalry over the last 10+ years. The Hawks always come to play against the Cats, but after a tough loss at home, Geelong will be eager to bounce back and look to have a real edge in the midfield battle.
Key Stat: Four of the last five games between these two sides have been decided by 11 points or less.
