AFL Round 8: Saturday Night Match Previews & Betting Tips
Can the reigning premiers finally flex their muscles when they face St Kilda, and who will come away with an important victory in Showdown 46 as both the Power and Crows search for a 5th victory of the season?
St Kilda v West Coast - Marvel Stadium - 7:25pm
The West Coast Eagles will be desperate to regain the form that saw them swoop to last year’s premiership when they travel to face St Kilda at Marvel Stadium, searching for a big win to spark a run up the ladder.
The Eagles overcame a dogged Suns outfit by 23-points in Perth last weekend to move to 4-3 for the season, snapping a two-match losing streak in which they had lost by a combined margin of 100 points. Similarly, the Saints have failed to impress during their last two outings; they first fell by 39-points at home to the Crows before more recently going down 114-70 to an undermanned Giants side in Canberra.
In order to arrest that slide, St Kilda will need to overcome a 1-9 record from its last 10 encounters with West Coast. The most recent six of those meetings have seen Josh J. Kennedy kick 27 goals, indicating he is the man to stop if the hosting Saints are to create an upset.
Key Stat: West Coast has won each of its last nine Round 8 matches.
Tip: West Coast
Best bet: West Coast -10.5
Value bet: West Coast over 24.5
Port Adelaide v Adelaide - Adelaide Oval - 7:40pm
Showdown 46 takes place on Saturday evening when the Port Adelaide and the Adelaide Crows each attempt to claim their fifth win of 2019.
Only percentage separates these teams on the ladder, with the Crows ahead due to their active three-match winning streak which includes victories over the Suns, Saints and Dockers by an average margin of 39.7 points.
Comparatively, Port Adelaide’s most recent outing ended in a 39-point away loss to Collingwood during which a 48-3 first-quarter deficit proved costly. The Power have been dealt no favours on the injury front, with Brad Ebert and co-captain Ollie Wines joining Robbie Gray and Tom Jonas on the sidelines. Although they are unquestionably some of the Power’s most important players, it remains to be seen whether their absences or the traditionally tight nature of this fixture will win out – four of the last five Showdowns have been decided by under three goals.
Key Stat: Adelaide has won 12 of its last 14 Saturday night matches at the Adelaide Oval.
Best bet: Adelaide -2.5
Value bet: Adelaide over 15.5
