AFL Round 9: Saturday Afternoon Match Previews & Betting Tips
The Saints look to snap their losing streak when they face the Pies, the Lions and Crows meet as they seek a top-four spot while the Dogs will look to upset the Cats on their own turf.
Collingwood v St Kilda - MCG - 1:45pm
In search a sixth consecutive victory, Collingwood will take on St Kilda at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.
The Magpies have carried their form from last season into 2019 and again look like one of the teams to beat, however, struggled against the last-placed Blues last week. A flurry of five goals late in the last quarter proved the difference during the 19-point win, with Brodie Grundy’s 25-disposal, 48-hitout, two-goal performance crucial as he became only the second player in history to record such a state line.
Grundy is expected to cause major headaches for a Saints side which has conceded the second-most hitouts in the competition, due in no small part to its usage of the undersized and inexperienced Rowan Marshall. Inexperience has been a common theme for St Kilda this season, with Jake Carlisle, Jarryn Geary, Dylan Roberton, Dan Hannebery and Jack Steven (mental health) all on the long-term injury list. Riding three consecutive losses, the lack of depth appears to have caught up with the Saints in recent weeks, and it remains difficult to see how they will buck that trend against a red hot Collingwood.
Key Stat: Collingwood has won six straight matches against St Kilda at the MCG
Best bet: Collingwood 1-39
Value bet: Collingwood over 39.5
Brisbane v Adelaide - Gabba - 2:10pm
Locked together on five wins in 2019, Brisbane and Adelaide will go in search of an important victory that will lock them inside the top four when they face off at the Gabba on Saturday afternoon.
Although their records remain the same, the path to Round 9 has been drastically different for the two clubs; Brisbane has lost three of its last five, whereas Adelaide enters this contest on a four-match winning streak. The Crows reached their current position by defeating the Power by 20-points in Showdown 46 despite a late scare which saw them concede five consecutive goals early in the fourth quarter.
Elsewhere, the Lions failed to capitalise on a 16-point second-quarter lead during their fixture against the Bulldogs at Mars Stadium, resulting in a 92-76 loss. The Lions return home to Brisbane where they have won three of four outings so far this season, however, in order to continue that trend they need to break a seven-match losing streak against the Crows having not defeated them since 2012.
Key Stat: Adelaide has won its last nine matches in Queensland
Best bet: Brisbane 1-39
Value bet: Brisbane -3.5/Over 174.5
Geelong v Western Bulldogs - GMHBA Stadium - 4:40pm
Geelong continued on their merry way last week and solidified their top position on the ladder as they disposed of the Kangaroos by four goals. They now head back down the highway to host the Bulldogs who are enjoying their best form of the season after back-to-back wins against top-eight opponents.
After setting Marvel Stadium alight, Aaron Naughton was relatively kept in check but still led the Bulldogs with three goals including a stunning set shot in the stroke of half the to shift the momentum into the second half, momentum the Doggies used to come away with a 16-point win over the Lions.
Riding a two-game win streak, they will be confident of troubling the Cats again after their incredible upset against them last season when they were six-goal underdogs. They’re faced with similar odds this time around as the Cats look for redemption and make it the 11th win in their last 12 meetings against the Bulldogs.
Key Stat: Geelong has won 10 of its last 11 matches against the Bulldogs, six of which have been played at GMHBA Stadium
Best bet: Geelong -30.5
Value bet: Geelong -30.5/Over 158.5
