Sydney v Hawthorn - SCG - 7:50pm

Two of the competition’s heavyweights, Sydney and Hawthorn do battle on Friday night at the SCG as they both look to cling onto their September aspirations. Only once in the past 15 years have both these sides missed the finals in the same season, however, 2019 appears to be going down that path with the Swans currently holding a 4-8 record and the Hawks sitting just above them at 5-7.

With that being said, Sydney provided its strongest performance of the season last time out by defeating West Coast by 45-points thanks to Tom Papley’s career-best five-goal effort and a vintage performance from Lance Franklin. The former Hawk has kicked more than three goals in just two of his nine appearances against the brown and gold since moving to the harbour city, resulting in six Swans losses.

Hawthorn holds a 14-7 record over the Swans this decade with 13, including the last six, decided by under 15-points. The Hawks have also their last five matches against the Swans when starting as underdogs, a tag they will carry into Friday night’s match as they look to keep their finals hopes alive.

Key Stat: The away team has covered the line in eight of the last nine matches between Sydney and Hawthorn.
