Hawthorn v Collingwood - MCG - 7:50pm

Collingwood will be desperate for a bounce-back performance as they look to retain their position in the competition top two when they face Hawthorn at the MCG on Friday night.

The Magpies’ 44-point loss to the Kangaroos during Round 15 marked their equal-lowest score since falling 96-37 to the Hawks in April 1995 and had coach Nathan Buckley seething. It seems a longshot the 2019 Hawks will be able to replicate that feat given they have dropped to 15th on the ladder and without a victory in their last four matches. However, Hawthorn was valiant in defeat last weekend, pushing West Coast to the limit and narrowly falling by six-points on a rain soaked MCG and if not for inaccurate goal kicking, would have upset the reigning premiers.

Alastair Clarkson’s charges hold a dominant recent head-to-head record against Collingwood, winning 11 of their last 12 meetings. That record includes a 34-point victory back in Round 1 of 2018, however, given Brownlow Medalist Tom Mitchell had 54 disposals on that night, his absence alone could be enough to swing Friday’s result in the Magpies’ favour.

Key Stat: Collingwood has won eight of its last nine Friday night matches.
