AFL Round 16: Saturday Night Match Previews & Betting Tips
The Bulldogs will endeavour to keep their season alive as they host the Cats at Marvel Stadium while the Dockers are looking to snap an eight-game losing streak against the Eagles in the Western Derby.
Western Bulldogs v Geelong - Marvel Stadium - 7:25pm
Looking to maintain its dominant position atop of the AFL ladder, Geelong will face the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night.
It was only seven weeks ago the Cats dealt the Dogs a 44-point defeat at GMHBA Stadium after the Dogs closed within nine points in the final quarter. Since that result, Geelong has gone on to lose just once while the Bulldogs hold a 2-3 record.
Despite that sub-par five-match stretch, the Bulldogs did win their most recent fixture by upsetting the Power by 25-points at the Adelaide Oval in arguably their best win of the season. That result did not come without cost, with Caleb Daniel expected to miss at least the next three weeks due to a hamstring injury.
There is the chance Geelong could be dealt an even greater blow if Patrick Dangerfield is unable to overcome the hip injury he sustained during last week’s 27-point triumph over Adelaide. Even so, a 12-1 record from their last 13 matches against the Dogs should enhance the Cats’ position as the undisputed favourites.
Key Stat: The underdogs have covered the line in each of the Western Bulldogs' last 10 matches at Marvel Stadium.
Best bet: Western Bulldogs +21.5
Value bet: Geelong under 24.
Fremantle v West Coast - Optus Stadium - 8:10pm
The second Western Derby of the season sees Fremantle as the home team host West Coast on Saturday night at Optus Stadium.
Rarely over the last couple of seasons has this fixture been so important for both the Dockers and Eagles, with the former needing to bounce back from a horrific last-minute loss to the Blues in order to continue their September push, while the reigning premiers will look to solidify their top four position and keep pressure on the top two.
West Coast was on the winning end of a thrilling result last weekend, downing Hawthorn by six-points at the MCG behind a late Jamie Cripps goal. That result saw the successful return of Nic Naitanui from an ACL injury and this encounter could see the Eagles virtually at full strength for the first time in 2019 with Jeremy McGovern to return and potentially fellow defnder Tom Barrass.
West Coast also hold a dominant recent record over their neighbours, winning the last eight matches, but after such a disappointing result last week, the Dockers should be primed to bounce back and cause the Eagles some difficulty.
Key Stat: Fremantle has covered the line in each of its last eight Saturday matches at Optus Stadium.
Best bet: Fremantle +19.5
Value bet: Fremantle 1-39
