AFL Round 17: Saturday Night Match Previews & Betting Tips
Geelong’s dominance at should be set to continue when they host the struggling Saints, while the Crows will look for a quick response after their Showdown embarrassment when they face the Suns at Metricon Stadium.
Geelong v St Kilda - GMHBA Stadium - 7:25pm
Back at home after losing on the road again, Geelong will look to reassert itself as the team to beat in 2019 when they host St Kilda at GMHBA Stadium.
The 16-point loss to the Bulldogs marked the Cats’ second poor outing in three weeks, having also fallen to the Power in Round 14. Even so, those results aren’t likely to phase the Cats entering this fixture given they have not lost to a Victorian side in Geelong since 2015. History is also on the side of Geelong in this head-to-head matchup, with its last loss to St Kilda at GMHBA Stadium coming way back in 1999 with the last three meetings at this venue resulting in an average winning margin of 81.3 points for the home team.
The Saints never looked likely to threaten the Kangaroos last week in Hobart, falling behind by over 40 points at quarter time. To their credit, they fought on gamely, reducing the margin ever so slightly to 39-points at the final siren, which dropped them to their third straight defeat and inside the bottom four for the first time this season.
Key Stat: St Kilda has failed to cover the line in each of its last seven matches as an underdog.
Best bet: Geelong 40+

Gold Coast v Adelaide - Metricon Stadium- 7:25pm
In desperate need of a bounce-back performance after a dismal exhibition in the Showdown, Adelaide will hit the road to take on the Gold Coast Suns at Metricon Stadium. That 57-point loss to the Power saw the Crows fail to kick a goal from the 17-second mark of the third quarter until the final siren, leaving them clinging to eighth by percentage alone.
Even so, the home side’s recent form indicates Adelaide shouldn’t encounter many issues on Saturday night given the Suns’ 150-58 loss to Richmond last weekend left them without a win in 11 matches. Furthermore, Adelaide has already hammered Gold Coast once in 2019, triumphing 119-46 at home behind a six-goal display from Eddie Betts in his 300th game. In fact, the Crows are the only side yet to lose to the Suns in their history, winning the 12 previous meetings by an average margin of 57.3 points.
Key Stat: The Gold Coast have never beaten the Adelaide Crows in their 12 attempts.
Best bet: Adelaide 40+
