AFL Round 18: Saturday Afternoon Match Previews & Betting Tips
The Tigers will look to continue their hot form when they host the Power, Carlton will be searching for back-to-back wins when they face the Suns before a huge clash with top four implications when the Giants will look to snap their losing streak against the Pies.
Richmond v Port Adelaide - MCG - 1:45pm
The Tiger train will look to continue to gain momentum when they face the up and down Power at the MCG on Saturday afternoon. Having gone alternated between wins and losses for the last nine weeks, the Power will be desperate to continue that theme on Saturday given they were beaten to the tune of 48-points at home to the Brisbane Lions last week.
The trip may have come at a good time for Ken Hinkley’s menh who haven’t played away from home in four weeks and won their only other appearance at the MCG this season, back in Round 1. However that performance may be difficult to repeat against a Richmond side that have won three straight matches and owned this ground in recent times, winning 27 of its last 30 matches, including seven straight against interstate sides.
The Tigers now sit just four points behind the second-placed Magpies and seem to be building at the right time of the season after injuries derailed much of their first half of the season. Richmond were victorious by seven-points when these clubs met in Round 4 despite a number of injuries to key players. With nearly a full list to choose from this time around, another Richmond victory seems likely.
Key Stat: Richmond has won each of its last 16 day matches at the MCG.
Best bet: Richmond 1-39
Value bet: Port Adelaide +26.5/Under 163.5
Carlton v Gold Coast - Metricon Stadium - 2:10pm
On the rise after yet another surprise victory, Carlton will look to capitalise on its good form by downing Gold Coast at Marvel Stadium. The Blues’ seven-point Round 17 triumph over the Swans moved them to 3-2 since David Teague took over as caretaker coach despite going into each of those encounters as underdogs.
In fact, Saturday marks the first time that Carlton will enter a match as the favourite since losing to Gold Coast at this venue in Round 2 of 2018. That position is more than justified when considering the Suns will come into this fixture freshly removed from back-to-back defeats by a margin of 92 and 95 points that extended their losing streak to 12.
Gold Coast’s most recent victory actually came against Carlton by a 59-57 scoreline thanks to a late goal from Jack Bowes. The Blues haven’t won as favourites in over three years, perhaps giving the visitors some hope of breaking their dismal streak and at a venue they have performed admirably at in recent times.
Key Stat: The Gold Coast have covered the line in their last seven matches at Marvel Stadium
Best bet: Gold Coast +28.5
Value bet: Sam Walsh Most Disposals Group A
GWS v Collingwood - Giants Stadium - 4:35pm
Struggling with form and fitness, GWS will be desperate to snap their three-game losing streak when Collingwood visits GIANTS Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Giants’ current position is one the Magpies will be familiar with, having answered their critics through a thrilling one-point upset victory over the Eagles in Perth last weekend.
However, the injury toll that GWS is currently enduring will make it incredibly difficult for the club to avoid a fourth straight defeat; the Giants are now without both Josh Kelly and Stephen Coniglio after the latter injured his knee during last week’s 27-point loss to the Tigers, which has almost all but ruled him out for the remainder of the season.
Coniglio was a standout performer when these teams last met, recording 30 disposals and two goals during a 10-point semi-final loss last September. The Magpies have proved a handful on the road during 2019, winning each of their three fixtures away from Victoria, with two of those results coming against sides currently ranked in the top four and seven of their last nine interstate matches overall.
Key Stat: Collingwood has won 13 of its last 19 matches in New South Wales by a margin of 1-39 points.
Best bet: Collingwood 1-39
Value bet: Collingwood -1.5/Under 158.5
