AFL Round 19: Saturday Afternoon Match Previews & Betting Tips
Brisbane will look to continue their stellar form when they face a trip south to Launceston to take on the in-form Hawks, the Blues will be aiming for three straight victories when they host the Crows at the MCG before the Eagles and Kangaroos do battle in Perth.
Hawthorn v Brisbane - University of Tasmania Stadium- 1:45pm
Each with differing September aspirations on the line, Hawthorn and Brisbane will come together in search of a crucial victory at University of Tasmania Stadium.
The Lions have been the most in-form team in the AFL recently, winning five consecutive matches to jump into second spot. However, they now have to navigate the curse of that position; the team sitting 2nd at the start of the round hasn’t won since May 24.
Meanwhile, Hawthorn has been similarly successful in recent times, winning three on the trot – including top-four scalps Collingwood and Geelong – to move within touching distance of the eight. The Hawks also defeated the Dockers at this venue during that stretch, moving them to 27-2-1 W/L/D from their last 30 matches in Launceston. However, it is crucial to note that one of those two losses came against Brisbane last season, and have lost three straight matches against the young Lions.
Key Stat: Hawthorn has won 27 of its last 30 matches at University of Tasmania Stadium
Best bet: Hawthorn 1-39
Value bet: Hawthorn -1.5/Under 158.5
Carlton v Adelaide - MCG - 2:10pm
In desperate need of a victory to solidify its position inside the top eight, Adelaide will tackle an in-form Carlton lineup at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.
The Crows were defeated for the third time in four weeks through a 21-point loss to the Bombers during Round 18, leaving them clinging to 8th spot. Meanwhile, the Blues moved their record to 4-2 since David Teague took over from Brendon Bolton by defeating the Suns by 24-points. That result saw the continuation of Carlton’s strong attacking play under Teague; the Blues are now averaging 87.5 points under his tutelage, a number that would rank fourth in the AFL across the season.
Although the Crows rank fifth for points conceded in 2019, they have looked shaky of late, conceding 96+ in each of their last three losses. However, Adelaide will likely take confidence from its last two meetings with Carlton, which have resulted in a combined scoreline of 290-131 and the must-win nature of this match gives them the edge.
Key Stat: Carlton has lost 15 of its last 16 matches at the MCG.
Best bet: Adelaide -11.5
Value bet Adelaide -11.5/Over 162.5
West Coast v North Melbourne - Optus Stadium - 4:35pm
Looking to consolidate its position inside the top four, West Coast will welcome North Melbourne to Optus Stadium on Saturday afternoon in a rare day game at the venue.
Over the past couple of months, the Roos have demonstrated they are a force to be reckoned with on their day, recording five wins in eight matches. However, it remains to be seen whether last week’s 87-75 loss in Brisbane – the Kangaroos’ fourth interstate match in six weeks – has broken their spirit given it all but officially knocked them out of September contention.
Elsewhere, West Coast came out on top in a similarly hard-fought contest in Alice Springs, downing Melbourne by 13-points at TIO Traeger Park thanks in part to the Demons’ wayward kicking for goal. That marked four wins in five outings for the Eagles and when considering they have lost just once to the Kangaroos in Perth since 2010, that record is tipped to improve to 5-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Key Stat: West Coast has won each of its last 10 Saturday home matches.
Tip: West Coast
Best bet: West Coast -19.5
Value bet West Coast 40+
