AFL Round 20: Sunday Match Previews & Betting Tips
Collingwood does battle with the Gold Coast in a hope to get their top-four bid back on track, Carlton will look to pull off another upset when they meet the West Coast Eagles before the Lions aim to make it seven wins in a row when they host the Bulldogs.
Collingwood v Gold Coast - MCG - 1:10pm
Back-to-back heavy defeats have left Collingwood floundering in their lowest position on the ladder since Round 4.
They must get back on the winners' list against the Gold Coast Suns if they’re to keep their hopes of a top-four finish alive.
The Suns come to the MCG on Sunday with a 14-game losing streak hanging over their heads after they were beaten in dramatic circumstances last week by the Bombers, conversing two goals in the final minute.
It was a shattering result in an otherwise promising display by the Suns after recent blowout losses. Ben King was awarded the NAB Rising Star nomination for his four-goal haul hail week and will fancy his chances of a repeat performance against an undersized Collingwood backline who will now be without Jordan Roughead who suffered concussion in last week’s loss to Richmond.
These two teams last met in Melbourne in 2016 where Collingwood ran out 71-point winners and have won four straight against the Suns by an average margin of 48.5 points and will be hoping for a similar result despite losing three of their past four matches at the MCG.
Key Stat: Gold Coast has a 1-20 W/L record playing interstate after a loss from 2017 onwards.
Best bet: Collingwood wire-to-wire
Value bet: Collingwood -37.5/Over 163.5
Carlton v West Coast - Marvel Stadium - 3:20pm
Carlton head into their meeting with West Coast on Sunday afternoon in unfamiliar territory having won three consecutive matches for the first time in three years.
David Teague has got the Blues up and firing, having won five of their seven matches during his tenure in charge.
Their biggest test though will come against the reigning premiers who have spot in their sights and will look to solidify their place inside the top four.
Once maligned for their interstate record, particular at the MCG, The Eagles have won their last eight games in Melbourne at the MCG and Marvel Stadium including their Round 5 fixture against the Blues last season at this venue.
That 10-point win was West Coast’s fourth consecutive over Carlton who hasn’t tasted victory against the Eagles since 2014 but has covered the line in five of their past six encounters.
Josh Kennedy kicked a season-high seven goals last week in the 49-point win over North Melbourne and will be hard to stop this week.
However, even if Carlton do manage to contain Kennedy this week, Jack Darling is still present with one of the two kicking at least three goals in every match since Round 9.
Key Stat: Carlton have covered the line in five of their last six matches against West Coast
Tip: West Coast
Best bet: West Coast 1-39
Value bet: Carlton +17.5/Under 168.5
Brisbane v Western Bulldogs - Gabba - 4:40pm
Seeking a 7th straight victory as they look to move back inside the top two, Brisbane host the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba on Sunday to conclude Round 20.
It’s a crunch game for the visitors as well who entered this weekend in 9th, just percentage behind the 8th-placed Crows thanks to a dominant victory over the Dockers last week.
The win was set up by a scintillating 12-goal opening first half, which effectively put the game out of reach for Fremantle.
Brisbane overcame some early difficulties to defeat Hawthorn in Launceston for the second straight year and continue on their merry way.
Since their bye, Brisbane have won six straight matches, their most since 2002 and have cemented their spot in September.
During this season the Lions have snapped long losing streaks against West Coast, Sydney and Adelaide and will need to overcome another against the Bulldogs who Chris Fagan is yet to defeat (0-5) which includes their meeting in Round 8 this year, which the Bulldogs won by 16-points in Ballarat.
Key Stat: Brisbane are 9-1 when playing in Queensland this season
Best bet: Brisbane -17.5
Value bet: Brisbane -17.5/Over 161.5
