AFL Round 21: Sunday Match Previews & Betting Tips
Ross Lyon must find a way to defeat his old team if the Dockers are to keep their season alive when they travel to Marvel Stadium, the Tigers will look to continue their charge towards the top two when they face the Blues before the Eagles host the Crows in another match with big finals implications.
St Kilda v Fremantle - Marvel Stadium - 1:10pm
After a shock win against the Cats last week, Fremantle will attempt to create another upset by downing St Kilda at Marvel Stadium and keep their faint finals dreams alive. The Dockers were impressive against the ladder-leading Cats last week, using a dominant second half to win by 34-points at Optus Stadium. That result moved Fremantle’s record at home against interstate sides to 7-2 in 2019. However, their 2-6 record away from Western Australia certainly doesn’t provide confidence in the Dockers’ ability to perform on Sunday. That sentiment is backed by Fremantle’s dismal 113-66 loss to the Bulldogs at Docklands a fortnight ago, a side St Kilda defeated 116-89 in Round 18. The Saints came close to registering a memorable interstate victory when they visited the Dockers in Round 3, however, ultimately fell by five-points at Optus Stadium. Jack Steven and Dan Hannebery return to boost the Saints midfield, coupled with an 8-2 record from their last 10 home matches against the Dockers, the Saints should be confident of claiming victory.
Key Stat: St Kilda has won each of its last 16 Sunday matches as a favourite.
Tip: St Kilda
Best bet: St Kilda - 10.5
Value bet: St Kilda -10.5/Under 165.5
Richmond v Carlton - MCG - 3:20pm
In search of its seventh consecutive victory, which will further enhance their push for a top-two finish, Richmond will tackle traditional rivals Carlton at the MCG on Sunday afternoon.
When these sides last met it was the Tigers who made easy work of the Blues in what was the 2019 season-opener, running out 33-point victors thanks in no small part to a 41-1 start to the contest. However, this time around Carlton could prove a far more competitive opposition, as showcased by its ability to hang in there against the reigning premiers last weekend. That 24-point defeat marked the Blues’ eighth outing under caretaker coach David Teague and moved them to 5-3 across that period.
The Blues have been much improved in attack across that eight-match stretch – averaging 85.9 points – but it remains to be seen whether they will find the same success against a Richmond lineup that has conceded just 64.0 points per match throughout its winning streak.
Key Stat: Richmond has won 17 consecutive day matches at the MCG
Best bet: Richmond 1-39
Value bet: Richmond 40+
West Coast v Adelaide - Optus Stadium - 4:40pm
A crucial clash to conclude Round 21 as both teams need a win to cement their September aspirations. West Coast and Adelaide meet at Optus Stadium on Sunday afternoon at the opposite end of the top eight, but nothing less than four points will do for either club.
Adelaide is precariously placed in eighth position and is seemingly in greater need of a victory, however, with the top-four race as close as they come, the second-placed Eagles won’t be ready to roll over.
Neutrals will be hopeful that this encounter lives up to the precedent set by the first meeting between these clubs in 2019. That result ended in an 85-73 Eagles victory at the Adelaide Oval, during which the visitors stunningly erased a 33-point third-quarter deficit. Since that Round 10 result, West Coast has lost just twice, capped off by a 24-point triumph over Carlton at Marvel Stadium last weekend. With a 2-5 season record against sides currently sitting in the top eight, the Crows will again be up against it on Sunday.
Key Stat: West Coast's last seven day matches have gone OVER the total match points line.
Tip: West Coast
Best bet: West Coast over 24.5
Value bet: West Coast -27.5/Over 167.5
