AFL Round 22: Saturday Afternoon Match Previews & Betting Tips
Brett Rattan will get a chance to coach against his former club as Carlton face St Kilda at the MCG, it’s 1 v 2 in a blockbuster clash at the Gabba before the Crows look to jump back into the top eight when they host the Pies.
Carlton v St Kilda - MCG - 1:45pm
An intriguing clash at the MCG on Saturday afternoon as the Blues tackles the Saints at the MCG. It will be the second meeting between the clubs in 2019, but this time both cubs will have different coaches at the helm.
David Teague has just been appointed in the role officially after leading his team to a 5-4 record since taking over, while Brett Ratten is now 3-1 in charge of St Kilda and will coach against his former club for the first time.
The most recent win of those came in thrilling fashion last weekend, as they rose from the dead to defeat the Dockers by three-points at Marvel Stadium thanks to some late heroics from Jack Steven and Josh Bruce. Elsewhere, Carlton fell by 28-points to Richmond in wet conditions at the MCG – its largest loss under Teague.
When these teams met in Round 10 it was the Saints who won by 13-points in a dour affair, but since the coaching change, both teams have increased their scoring output two fold and a much higher scoring contest is expected this time.
Key Stat: Carlton has covered the line in 16 of its last 17 Saturday day matches at the MCG.
Best bet: Carlton +1.5
Value bet: Carlton +1.5/Under 163.5
Brisbane v Geelong - Gabba - 2:10pm
Each vying for the minor premiership, Brisbane and Geelong will go in search of a crucial four points when they face off at the Gabba.
Despite both holding a 15-5 record, it is the Cats who are currently the league leaders due to their superior percentage. That gap was cut into by Brisbane’s dominant 144-53 triumph over Gold Coast last weekend, although Geelong’s historic 69-14 triumph over North Melbourne means the difference between the clubs remains nearly unassailable. Even so, a win for the Lions would all but assure they enter Round 23 sitting atop the ladder.
Completing such a result has been far from easy for the Lions, who have suffered eight consecutive defeats to the Cats by an average of 50.0 points since defeating them in 2013 behind Ashley McGrath’s miracle match-winner. With that being said, the hosts are 10-1 in Queensland this season, indicating they are every chance to put that lengthy losing streak to bed.
Key Stat: Tom Hawkins has kicked three or more goals in 10 of Geelong's last 11 interstate day matches.
Best bet: Brisbane 1-39
Value bet: Tom Hawkins Top Goal Scorer
Adelaide v Collingwood - Adelaide Oval - 4:35pm
Each in need of a victory to further their September aspirations, Adelaide and Collingwood will come together at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday afternoon.
The Crows find themselves outside the top eight entering Round 22 after a gallant 10-point defeat to the Eagles in Perth. That result marked the side’s fifth loss in seven matches, however, was arguably its strongest performance since downing GWS in Round 12. Darcy Fogarty proved a huge factor during that contest, booting five goals to announce himself as a possible season-saver after spending the majority of the year battling form and fitness in the SANFL.
Meanwhile, Collingwood was able to defeat lowly Melbourne by 17-points in a dour affair at the MCG. That result continued the patchy form which has seen Collingwood fail to win more than two quarters in seven of its last eight outings. Despite that record, the Magpies won four of those contests, indicating they should be tough to overcome at the Adelaide Oval and keep their fantastic interstate record intact.
Key Stat: The underdog has covered the line in 13 of Adelaide's last 14 day matches.
Best bet: Collingwood 1-39
Value bet: Collingwood +6.5/under 159.5
