West Coast v Essendon - Optus Stadium - 8:10pm

The 2019 Finals series begins at Optus Stadium on Thursday evening when West Coast plays host to Essendon.

Entering Round 23 this seemed an unlikely first-week matchup, however, the Eagles cost themselves a top-four finish with their upset home loss to the Hawks. As such, West Coast faces an often unpredictable Essendon side, which will be looking to win as an underdog at this venue for the third time in four matches.

The Bombers’ most recent trip to Perth resulted in a 32-point victory over Fremantle during Round 22, which cemented their place in September. However, that result isn’t anticipated to have much bearing over this matchup when considering the Dockers finished 13th after losing eight of their final 10. More indicative of what is to come could be Essendon’s 35-point loss to West Coast at this venue in June. The Bombers finished with 20 fewer scoring shots on that night, indicating it will be an uphill battle for them to win their first final since 2004.

Key Stat: 12 of the last 13 West Coast matches have gone OVER the total match points line.
