5 Best Bets For The Weekend
This weekend's 5 best bets cover UFC 234, C F Orr Stakes, BBL, Premier League and A-League
Horse Racing – Caulfield Race 8 C F Orr Stakes
The Tip: Kementari
Why: Endured a completely luckless preparation last time in, finishing in the top 4 in five of six races (4 of which were at Group 1 level). His best run was at this track and distance in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes where despite being 4 wide no cover the trip he was nosed out by Humidor in the final stride. He’s 3:0-2-1 at Caulfield, 5:2-1-1 at 1400m and 4:1-2-0 first-up.
BBL - Sydney Thunder v Hobart Hurricanes
Saturday 6:15 pm
Tip: Hobart Hurricanes
Why: The Hurricanes may have already sealed a home final and essentially have nothing to gain from this match but you can bet Matthew Wade and his troops won't want to flirt with form and will field a full-strength line-up hell-bent on winning despite this match possibly being a dead rubber.
The Thunder have struggled since their international stars departed and have only beaten the Hurricanes twice in nine previous meetings.
Premier League – Fulham v Man United
The Tip: Man United
Why: Four away wins on the trot for Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s men is pretty ominous for Fulham.
One major improvement Solskjær has made to United is their defence. David de Gea has kept three consecutive clean sheets on the road – primarily virtue of his own brilliance – which is handy considering Fulham rely on outscoring opponents rather than being solid at the back themselves.
At $1.60, United are a really good price.
UFC 234 – Whittaker v Gastelum
The Tip: Whittaker by KO/TKO
Why: Gastelum is looking for success in his first ever title fight - this won’t be an easy feat for the American as he looks to put an end to the Champ’s 9 fight win streak.
The Heavy-handed American is more than capable of dishing out some punishment to the Champ, but stylistically, that plays into Whittaker’s hands. This fight should remain standing, with Whittaker’s takedown defence mitigating any real impact Gastelum might have in taking the fight to the ground.
Gastelum will need to be wary of his stamina as he’s not exactly the fittest UFC athlete. On the other hand, Whittaker is known for his engine and if the fight goes beyond the third round, you have to favour the Aussie to finish strongly.
A-League – Melbourne Victory v Perth Glory
The Tip: Perth Glory
Why: Perth are the best defensive team on the road, shipping just six goals in seven matches. They are also the only side in the competition not to lose on the road yet, winning five of their seven matches.
Victory have been prone to copping goals and have kept just one clean sheet in six matches. Perth won this fixture earlier in the season with a last-minute Chris Ikonomidis goal. The away team has won the past two clashes between the sides. Perth has only lost once this season.
