This Weekends 5 Best Bets: 22nd - 23rd June
This weekend's best bets cover the Rugby League, AFL, Cricket World Cup, FIFA Women's World Cup and State of Origin.
Rugby League – New Zealand v Tonga
The Tip: New Zealand
Why: If NZ can hold off the Tongan pack, their experience and class in the halves and backline should be too much for Tonga. The last time New Zealand lost in Auckland was 2006. In their last start there they beat Australia 26-24 in 2018.
Cricket World Cup – India v Afghanistan
The Tip: Dawlat Zadran to be top Afghanistan bowler
Why: Dawlat has five wickets from his three matches this tournament—the best wickets-to-balls ratio in the side by a significant distance. Considering the pulverising Rashid Khan’s bowling got against England, I suspect seam will be the key to removing the Indian batsman at Southampton rather than the wealth of spinners at their disposal.
AFL – Port Adelaide v Geelong
The Tip: Geelong
Why: The Cats will be seeking to continue their brilliant recent interstate record having won their last five matches outside Victoria. Geelong have won 14 of their last 15 matches against Port Adelaide.
FIFA Women’s World Cup – Norway v Australia
The Tip: Australia
Why: Australia are ranked 6 places higher than Norway in the world rankings. They last faced off early in 2018 with the Matildas claiming a late 4-3 win. Missing their best player, Ballon d'Or winner Ada Hegerberg at the tournament, Norway could struggle to contain the green and gold.
State of Origin – Queensland v New South Wales
The Tip: Queensland
Why: With all the pressure on NSW to keep the series alive and new combinations to get used to, Queensland have a noted continuity advantage over NSW, making only two changes due to injury. I expect this well-drilled Maroons side who have a strong mental edge over their opposition to get the job done in Perth.
