This Weekend's 5 Best Bets: 3rd - 4th August
This weekend's best bets cover the AFL, NRL, The Championship, Community Shield and UFC.
AFL – Essendon v Port Adelaide
The Tip: Essendon
Why: Having won both of their encounters last year, Essendon have a strong record over Port Adelaide - winning 8 their past 10 meetings. Essendon have also won 7 of their last 8 games, including 5 on the trot.
NRL – Canterbury Bulldogs v Penrith Panthers
The Tip: Penrith Panthers Half Time/Full Time
Why: After losing last week to the Raiders, this looks like a good bounce back game for the Panthers given they have won 4 of their last 5 against the Dogs. Look for the Panthers to get an early lead - the Dogs are slow starters, losing their last 3 first halves by an average of 8 points.
Football: Championship – Barnsley v Fulham
The Tip: Fulham
Why: Despite their dismal relegation from the Premier League last season, it’s hard to see how Fulham won’t have success back in the Championship.
Aleksandar Mitrović will score goals for fun back at this level and I expect them to kick off their season strongly against the newly promoted Barnsley who have lost Ethan Pinnock, Liam Lindsay and Adam Davies.
UFC – Colby Covington v Robbie Lawler
The Tip: Covington by decision
Why: While Lawler might have the more potent moments, Covington’s high pace is something that has caused Lawler a good deal of trouble in the past (particularly on the judges’ scorecards). In this fight Covington probably takes some heavy shots, but if he survives the bursts, he wins.
Football: Community Shield – Manchester City v Liverpool
The Tip: Manchester City
Why: Basing predictions on pre-season games isn’t that reliable but City look much slicker than Liverpool heading into this.
Liverpool encountered many problems in recent weeks and with them missing a key player in Sadio Mane and potentially others, I expect City to win back to back Community Shields.
