AUSTRALIA vs PAKISTAN 3rd Test, Sydney 3rd Jan 2017

Cricket glides into 2017, and with it comes the New Year’s test – an annual tradition at the picturesque SCG.

The Pakistanis move into this final test hoping to ensure there won’t be a demoralizing whitewash – especially given that for long periods in this series, Pakistan have actually been in control.

You only need to look back to the Gabba test, where Pakistan went agonizingly close to pulling off the greatest run chase in test history. They fell 39 runs short but their effort to nearly overcome a staggering 490 in their 2nd innings was very special. People should not forget that.

We have 4 tips for the cricket punters at $3.25, $5,0, $7.50 and $7.0 so get stuck in as we enter the new year with profitable ambitions.

WEATHER

Last year’s test in Sydney against the West Indies lost two days to rain and glancing over at the forecast, there are predictions of rain on each and every day of this match. We won’t see a washout like last year, but there will be interruptions with that old chestnut 'a shower or two'. Why don't they say 'a shower or seven'? Meteorology is the only profession in the world where you can get it so wrong and still have a gig....but we digress. There has been brutal humidity as well as 35 degree+ days in Sydney recently although this will cool to a more bearable mid-twenties for most of the test. So expect the weather to have some impact at the very least.

CAN PAKISTAN BOUNCE BACK?

This is a pertinent question – and given the odds, we want to dissect this carefully as the Aussies have come up frightfully short around the $1.40 mark. Some might look at this as 40% on their money for 5 days work, and city fund managers would fall over themselves to generate a 10th of that kind of return in a year, but surely this match isn’t as cut and dried as that. The $1.40 looks very risky on face value.

A lot of punters will be looking at this game thinking how could they back a team that so meekly capitulated at the MCG last week. Yes, it doesn’t necessarily inspire, but with the series won, will there be the same motivation by the Aussies to bury them 3-0? Conversely for Pakistan there will be a real commitment to show the fight that evaporated in the big outfield at the ‘G’ but was never more evident than in those last two days in Brisbane.

THE ONLY WAY IS UP

When he isn’t lairing it up on Instagram or some other form of social media, it is worth listening to Shane Warne. He has been rabbiting on about YASIR SHAH for a while now, and cometh the hour, cometh the man. When the greatest leggie the world has seen, works himself into a lather like he has about Yasir, you pay attention. Shah has only played 22 tests, but has bagged 122 wickets. He is the fastest modern day player to 100 Test Wickets (in 17 matches) and the SCG is a spinners paradise. He will get a boatload of overs from skipper Misbah-Al-Haq, so we have to side with him to be TOP PAKISTAN BOWLER in this test.

THE TIP: YASIR SHAH to be TOP PAKISTAN BOWLER

AUSTRALIA: THE CURSE OF NUMBER 6

Who would want to throw their hand up for the cursed Australian No6 position in the batting lineup? Nic Maddinson was yet another victim of this position that has swallowed up the likes of Callum Ferguson and Mitch Marsh in recent times. All-rounder Hilton Cartwright will make his test debut as Jackson Bird steps aside for him to fill the not-so-coveted 6th slot in the Australian batting order.

Australia’s top order has been firing pretty well with all of them cashing in at one stage or another. Warner seems to be relishing the vice-captain role, although his inner-bogan does resurface occasionally. Renshaw will get better – he is only 20, he just needs to put his rod away and stop fishing outside off to remain in the centre longer. Peter Hanscomb looks to have a very long career in front of him in the baggy green and has been a great addition to the side. Uzzie is back to his 2015 best, and Steve Smith is starting to loom ominously as a player of a generation – although some of his captaincy decisions still have some pundits scratching their heads.

The top 5 in the order are more than capable to overcome the Bermuda Triangle of 6th spot, but with the Ashes on the distant horizon, it would be good to try and alleviate that curse….if at all curable. Over to you Hilton......

YOU SPIN ME RIGHT ROUND……

The Aussie selectors have added two spinners to the squad of 13 (so forget the curators preparing a flat, lifeless deck). Those additions are Manly/NSW/Sixers left-arm orthodox spinner Stephen Norman O’Keefe, as well as another left-arm ortho in sandgroper Ashton Charles Agar. Why the middle names? Not sure, but seems like Aussies want to call their spinners any other name except their first name…….’Gary’?

Who will get the gig?

The clear favourite has to SOK (O’Keefe) who has plenty of experience at the SCG with NSW and the Sydney Sixers. He has recovered well from a broken finger in grade cricket, and we expect him to line up next to ‘Gary’ Lyon as the spinning duet for the Aussies.

Whilst Starc and Hazelwood have been tormenting the Pakistanis recently along with Jackson Bird, we expect the spinners to be front and centre for both teams. This is why with some excitement we see ‘Gary’ is succulent odds to be Top Wicket Taker for the Australians in this test at $5.0+. That is simply too big. The Sydney crowd absolutely love ‘Gary’ Lyon and we think the man with the magnificent melon will step up to the plate and cause havoc. Definite punting material.

THE TIP: NATHAN 'GARY' LYON to be TOP AUSTRALIAN BOWLER

ANY OTHER INVESTMENTS?

It is hard to pile into the Aussies at $1.40 as there are much better $1.40 shots around, we feel that the spinners provide great value in the Top Bowler markets. It could well be worth taking a good look at PETER HANDSCOMB to be top Australian Bat @ $7.50+. His temperament and poise is outstanding, and with the abyss of 6 directly below him, he will have a big role to ensure that the scoreboard keeps ticking over and he remains at the crease for a prolonged period.

THE TIP: PETER HANDSCOMB to be TOP AUSTRALIAN BATSMAN

A THROW AT THE PEGS

The other one is a throw at the stumps, but you could do worse than have a little speccy on the Pakistanis in the match Win Market. They are $7.00+ and this is too big. They have proven they are capable, there are a few positives there for them if you dissect the previous two tests and they will seek to salvage some pride. They can spring an upset here.

THE TIP: PAKISTAN to WIN THE 3rd TEST
