Midweek racing returns to the Gold Coast to give Doomben and Eagle Farm a break from the heavy load they will carry in the summer months. The Gold Coast can be a tricky track because it virtually turns the whole way until entering the straight. But with the rail out four metres until the home straight and then two metres all runners should get their chance.
BEST BET: RACE 7, NO6 GRACEFULLY CHIC.
NEXT BEST BET: RACE 2, NO2 AUSSIE JACK.
BEST ROUGHIE: RACE 6, NO10 INNOCENT
R1 1.03pm SKY RACING CLASS 3 HANDICAP 900m
A small but very hard race.
ISIS MAGIC won both her starts before a spell in handy fashion and trialled well last week winning in good time. She has a three kilo claim here and that should probably make the difference in her favour.
INVINCIBLE EXPRESS has also been in very good form winning her past two starts but has to give Isis Magic six kilos after the claim for that mare.
PERDU was racing well including a good Ballina victory before having no luck in a harder race at Doomben when fifth last start.
GOT NEWS FOR YOU had three years off racing but since she has come back her efforts have been not all that bad. She is a recent Gold Coast winner and her two runs since were okay.
SELECTIONS: NO4 ISIS MAGIC, NO1 INVINCIBLE EXPRESS, NO2 PERDU, NO3 GOT NEWS FOR YOU.
VALUE RUNNER: NO3 GOT NEWS FOR YOU.
R2 1.38pm RACELANDIA COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES CLASS 4 HANDICAP 1200m
There was once talk about AUSSIE JACK (Next Best Bet) being a stakes class horse. He has never lived up to those wraps but he is handy and won twice before failing in a good quality winter carnival race back in May. The stable is renowned for first-up winners and he has reportedly been working well. Aussie Jack has won first-up and his best form is usually when he is on the fresh side. He has run second at both his starts this track and had no luck both times. There are a couple of other chances here but he looks a solid bet.
SELECTIONS: NO2 AUSSIE JACK, NO3 BEARSKIN, NO 4 ELIMINATOR, NO 5 ENDLESS PUZZLE.
VALUE RUNNER: NO5 ENDLESS PUZZLE.
R3 2.13pm COCOON TRACKSIDE PARTY MAIDEN HANDICAP 2200m
It is good to see authorities putting on staying maidens but only the brave would bet too much on them.
FASHION SAGA is getting into the professional placegetter class but she has been placed this track and distance. Both her runs back from a spell have been solid and provided she can step up from a last fourth at 1600m to 2200m she looks hard to beat.
FAIRY DANCER is only a three-year-old but has shown more than most of these. She has been placed her past three runs at 1800m and should be fit.
BLACK LIGHT is lightly raced but showed improvement when third this track and distance last time. Might be one of the few horses here on the up.
MR MALU has been placed only twice in nineteen starts but one of them was this track and distance when second last time. At least you know he will run 2200m strongly.
SELECTIONS: NO4 FASHION SAGA, NO7 FAIRY DANCER, NO5 BLACK LIGHT, NO9 MR MALU.
VALUE RUNNER: NO5 BLACK LIGHT.
R4 2.50pm SKY RACING OPEN HANDICAP 1800m
A small field but you could make some case for all of them.
DREAM HABIT has won his past three starts in the northern rivers and is a winner this track. He failed his only attempt at 1800m but is a stronger horse these days.
METEOROLOGIST is the biggest horse racing in Queensland but his go is 1800m – a distance he has won at on five occasions. Three of those wins have been at the Gold Coast 1800m and he is suited here.
LAST SIGHT was a good Eagle Farm winner at 1800m two runs back and didn't see out the 2020m last start. This track suits and has leading jockey Jeff Lloyd which is an advantage in a small field.
SAGA MISS was a strong winner this track and distance last start in weaker company. She looks the value runner at the weights.
SELECTIONS: NO4 DREAM HABIT, NO3 METEOROLOGIST, NO2 LAST SIGHT, NO7 SAGA MISS.
VALUE RUNNER: NO7 SAGA MISS.
R5 3.30pm RACELANDIA MAIDEN PLATE 1200m
By far the hardest race of the day with several good chances drawn off the track.
VOLPINO has drawn the rails barrier and his two runs in Sydney and Newcastle before coming north were good. He has trialled nicely without being knocked about.
ALL PLUCK is one of those badly drawn but his last start second was much better when he lived up to his usual strong track work. Might finally be ready to put it all together on the race track.
First starter CAMPO SERRANO is also drawn in the car park but his two trials were solid enough to give him a hope here.
KITTI PING is another ex-Sydney horse who was much better at his second start this area at this track when third.
RED RIGHT OUT and ROSES OF JOY have both trialled well for their first starts here.
SELECTIONS: NO13 VOLPINO, NO7 ALL PLUCK, NO8 CAMPO SERRANO, NO4 KITTI PING.
VALUE RUNNER: NO4 KITTI PING.
R6 4.10pm COCOON TRACKSIDE PARTY FILLIES AND MARES CLASS 4 HANDICAP 1200m
MAJELLA MAGIC is a Class 2 horse in a Class 4. But she has been good against some promising horses over 1000m of late. She looks as though 1200m should be ideal for her now.
ZERO TOLERANCE beat the promising Shamexpress three runs back and at her last start she didn't appear to handle the soft track. She is better placed here.
ALASKAN WOLF has good NSW form and provided she can overcome the wide barrier is a genuine chance.
TIBROGARGAN MISS got rid of her jockey at the start at Doomben last week. She is speedy and if left alone in front can win this.
INNOCENT (Best Roughie) will be good odds here but has a strong chance with a claim. She seems to go best this track and has a nice draw.
SELECTIONS: NO8 MAJELLA MAGIC, NO6 ZERO TOLERANCE, NO3 ALASKAN WOLF, NO1 TIBROGARGAN MISS.
VALUE RUNNER: NO10 INNOCENT.
R7 4.50pm SKY RACING CLASS 2 HANDICAP 1400m
GRACEFULLY CHIC (Best bet) finally has plenty of things in her favour here. She has been forced to go back from bad barriers in a couple of her recent starts. Last time she came from a mile back to be not far off some very promising three-year-olds in a Saturday race at Doomben. GRACEFULLY CHIC has always been rated a smart horse and she did trial very nicely before resuming last month. She has a handy weight, barrier one and a Group One winning jockey. To top it off she will be a good price.
SELECTIONS: NO6 GRACEFULLY CHIC, NO4 TEO TORRIATE, NO7 KYLIE'S FAME, NO8 OUR ROCKY.
VALUE RUNNER: NO7 KYLIE'S FAME.
