Doomben has had a well-deserved two-week rest, so even with the rail out seven metres it should play fairly. The forecast is for possible showers but the track should be good.

R1 12.28pm CHRISTMAS FUNCTIONS @ BRC MAIDEN HANDICAP 1350m
A strong maiden to start the day, with premier trainer Tony Gollan having a strong hand.
That said, the Michael Lakey-trained HIGH SPECS could be the one to beat here after a strong effort last start. Her past two runs have been good, she is well drawn and has premier jockey Jeff Lloyd.
The Gollan-trained LIPSTICK LOVER has been good in this company and didn't have much luck last start.
Her stablemate HUSSON BOOTS has also been racing well in this class and seems to be getting better with each run.
ARROGANT BOY had every chance last start but it wasn't a bad run. Stepping out to 1350m at third run back from a spell should help him.
SELECTIONS: NO 3 HIGH SPECS, NO 9 LIPSTICK LOVER, NO 10 HUSSON BOOTS, NO 1 ARROGANT BOY.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 1 ARROGANT BOY.
R2 1.03pm GIDDY UP CLUB MAIDEN HANDICAP 1640m
A pretty weak race and OSCAR THE ENCOSTA might improve enough to get away with a win here. He is a five-year-old having only his third start but it was a strong effort when second last time at the Sunshine Coast. He gets in well at the weights after the 3kgs claim for an experienced apprentice.
GUADALUPE has had a few chances and has been solid but is from an in-form stable and also has a 3kgs claim. The distance should suit.
MUSHIN has been placed three times at 1600m and at least you know he will run the distance.
LEGS UNBARRED is stepping up sharply in distance but ran home strongly last time at 1200m. She trialled well earlier this month.
MIA MAGIC‘s form doesn't look strong but she keeps missing the start and getting home hard. The day she jumps with the field she will nearly win at big odds.
SELECTIONS: NO 1 OSCAR THE ENCOSTA, NO 3 GUADALUPE, NO 4 MUSHIN, NO 9 LEGS UNBARRED.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 11 MIA MAGIC.
R3 1.38pm CANADIAN CLUB MELBOURNE CUP DAY FILLIES AND MARES CLASS 3 HANDICAP 1350m
THE LAST KISS was very unlucky in a strong Saturday three-year-old race at Eagle Farm. She was making a winning run at the 250m when stopped in her tracks and finished fourth. Provided the pace is on here, she will be very hard to beat.
LADY MACAN looks very hard to beat from the inside barrier in a small field. She was just run down on the line by a promising horse when second at this track at her second run this area. At her first start this area she was also second to a very promising horse. Her Sydney form was actually a lot better than it reads on paper as she had a few problems.
KIM NOIR was well backed first-up but disappointing. She will go better here.
LADY NO MORE was terrible last campaign but she is a lot better than that. She should go better here.
SELECTIONS: NO 7 THE LAST KISS, NO 1 LADY MACAN, NO 3 KIM NOIR, NO 2 LADY NO MORE.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 2 LADY NO MORE.
DOUBLE SUPERLATIVE (NEXT BEST BET) is very well bred being related to some extra smart gallopers. She is still a maiden but has been placed behind some very good three-year-olds. Her last start had "be on me next time" written all over it as she had no luck but finished a good third in a race where the winner won again on Saturday. She is very well placed at the Plate weight scale and has Group One jockey Damian Browne. She should get the run of the race from barrier (2).
SELECTIONS: NO 11 DOUBLE SUPERLATIVE, NO 2 HEARTS HONOUR, NO 3 I'M A RIPPA, NO 10 WRONG BIAS.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 3 I'M A RIPPA.
R5 2.50pm MOET & CHANDON CHAIRMAN'S CLUB CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1200m
MILITARY MISS won a Gold Coast trial impressively and was then a good first-up winner. She has a top jockey and good barrier so top chance again in what is a handy race.
BACKSLAPPER was a good winner in a handy maiden last start and will be fitter, but he has a big weight and a bad barrier, so don't take cramped odds.
YANKEE EXPRESS has won this track and was considered good enough to take to Sydney last campaign as a two-year-old. Also wasn't far away in a solid Saturday two-year-old at Ipswich before a spell. On those runs and solid recent Deagon trial placing looks to be a strong hope here.
RENESMEE started odds-on but ran into a future star galloper Monsieur Gustave when second at first start this area. She had trialled well prior to that run so looks a good chance here.
SELECTIONS: NO 3 MILITARY MISS, NO 1 BACKSLAPPER, NO 5 YANKEE EXPRESS, NO 7 RENESMEE.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 5 YANKEE EXPRESS.
R6 3.30pm VEUVE SOCIETY RATINGS BAND 0-70 HANDICAP 1050m
SUNDANCE has had problems but on his best form would beat these by 100 metres. He was entered for the open Eagle Farm sprint on Saturday but saved for this. He has trialled nicely on two occasions at the Gold Coast. We were tempted to make him the best bet of the day but we really need to see him find his old form on the racetrack before we get too carried away.
NATIONAL TRAIL is a professional placegetter but he rarely runs a bad race. This distance suits and he was a handy Toowoomba winner last start.
CAMOUFLAGE won three on end during his last campaign but just petered out towards the end of it with a few defeats. He does go okay fresh but has not won in two goes first up.
ONE IN ONE OUT has been going well at the Sunshine Coast and not the worst here.
SELECTIONS: NO 10 SUNDANCE, NO 4 NATIONAL TRAIL, NO 1 CAMOUFLAGE,NO 9 ONE IN ONE OUT.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 9 ONE IN ONE OUT.
R7 4.10pm GALLOPERS SPORTS CLUB CLASS 2 HANDICAP 1640m
WICKED TRILOGY was good at second try at 1600m last start. The winner ran the race at a slow pace and then kicked away with WICKED TRILOGY chasing hard. Gets a chance here despite a bad barrier.
WACK'EM has been very consistent on the Gold Coast and was rewarded with a handy last-start win. He deserves a chance in town.
TAIYOSHIN has also been very consistent and was strong in winning at Ipswich last start.
BRUMBY JACK (BEST ROUGHIE) lost form after showing promise early in his career. He did sneak home well at his last start when fifth at Ipswich, which showed he is getting back to his best. He has won at 1600m which was probably his best career run. Looks a hope at big odds.
SELECTIONS: NO 7 WICKED TRILOGY, NO 2 WACK' EM, NO 1 TAIYOSHIN, NO 4 BRUMBY JACK.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 4 BRUMBY JACK.
R8 4.50pm BRC CHRISTMAS CARNIVAL COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES CLASS 3 HANDICAP 1350m
This is a good race to finish the day but THE UMBRELLA MAN (BEST BET) does look very well placed here. He has won twice at 1350m, including a strong effort at Ipswich two starts back. He was then third this track behind the in-form Pepperano in a Saturday Class 3 Plate when he had the worse of the weights. He does need the pace on in his races but he will get that here. He is drawn off the track but that might even be to his advantage as he doesn't race well when cluttered up inside horses.
SELECTIONS: NO 7 THE UMBRELLA MAN, NO 5 REALLY REILLY, NO 2 HEROISM, NO 1 BIG BAMBOO.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 2 HEROISM.
