Queensland Racing is paying the price for what many saw as folly when it held a 12-event meeting at the Sunshine Coast last Friday. There was a stack of meetings on Tuesday and the combined result was to destroy nominations for this Ipswich meeting, which is usually very strong on Victoria Oaks day. The funny thing is that small fields at Ipswich often throw up rough results. The track should play fairly but there are storms predicted for the next few days.
R1 1.19pm THE MACK METROLINER CLASS 4 HANDICAP 1666m
A very tricky race because there doesn't appear to be much early pace.
BENICO’S PRINCE has very good form at Ipswich having won his past two tries this track. He just needs this to be truly run early to be the top chance.
CARTON was racing well at the provincial tracks before being well beaten in a much harder Saturday event at Eagle Farm last start. Back in this class he has to be hard to beat.
BILBERRY STAR had no luck at all two runs back and a disappointing last start. This small field suits.
AGORA has been racing well and this is the type of race he can win.
SELECTIONS: NO 3 BENICO’S PRINCE, NO 1 CARTON, NO 4 BILBERRY STAR, NO 2 AGORA.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 4 BILBERRY STAR.
R2 1.59pm THE MACK GRANITE MAIDEN PLATE 2150m
Another small field and another tricky race because again there doesn't appear to be much early pace.
SCHWARZY is yet to run a place in five starts but he did get home well in a shorter race last start. This is very weak and he has a 2kgs claim as well as the stable being in form.
MALU has good staying form but if they walk early he will be disadvantaged. Still, he looks the main danger on form.
PRIMUS INVICTUS has had 24 starts and has been placed eight times. If he is ever going to win a race, this could be it.
LYRA is from a stable who produces handy stayers. He has had two trials and two starts in NSW in harder company. It is hard to line him up but he has to be respected.
SELECTIONS: NO 4 SCHWARZY, No 2 MR MALU, NO 3 PRIMUS INVICTUS, NO 6 LYRA.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 6 LYRA.
R3 2.39pm THE MACK TRIDENT CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1000m
SIR DONALD (BEST BET) was beaten in a major upset first-up at Toowoomba, but there are very big wraps on him and he has won this track in fast time over 800m. He was also a good third here in a strong two-year-old race before a spell. He didn't have an official trial before his first-up defeat so he will be fitter. It really would be a shock if he is beaten again because this is an ordinary field.
SELECTIONS: NO 2 SIR DONALD, NO 4 REMLAPS JOY, NO 5 LIPSYNC, N0 1 RED REASON.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 5 LIPSYNC.
R4 3.19pm THE MACK SUPERLINER QTIS THREE-YEARS-OLD HANDICAP 800m
DON'T PLAY AROUND has been racing well and looks hard to beat here on her last-start Gold Coast win. Has been scratched a few times lately for this.
The big question here is SI SI SEQUALO, who was beaten out of sight at his only start. But he has won two trials in very impressive fashion and there were many excuses for his race defeat. Has a claim here and that should overcome the wide barrier.
HARLEQUIN BELLS showed a lot of pace when a good winner at the Sunshine Coast. He is drawn to get the run of the race here.
SEQUONDO has not had an official trial but is bred to go very fast. The stable is noted for first-up winners.
SELECTIONS: NO 4 DON'T PLAY AROUND, NO 5 SI SI SEQUALO, NO 2 HARLEQUIN BELLS, NO 7 SEQUONDO.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 7 SEQUONDO.
R5 4.05pm THE MACK TRUCK BRISBANE CANNONBALL SERIES (HEAT) BENCHMARK 75 HANDICAP 800m
This is a heat of a short course championship series which has a big prize money final in December.
THOMAS THE TANK (NEXT BEST BET) was a good winner three starts back at Doomben and has been going around in far better company in two starts since. There are few faster horses out of the barriers and while he has a big weight this isn't a very strong race. His very best form is on the wet tracks but he has won four races on good going.
SELECTIONS: NO 1 THOMAS THE TANK, NO 5 SOCIETY QUEEN, NO 6 ZOUZOUKAKIA, NO 3 FAVORITE SHADOW.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 3 FAVORITE SHADOW.
R6 4.50pm THE HOORAY HUMPHREY CLASS 3 HANDICAP 1200m
MAJELLA MAGIC looked home at the Gold Coast but just grabbed right on the line in a deceptive finish. Goes okay this track and looks hard to beat.
BACHELOR HEIR has some handy form in NSW but does have a big weight here. The stable likes a bet and this is the type of race they could let go at him.
SWEET REPEAT (BEST ROUGHIE) likes Ipswich and while she doesn't win too many gets in nicely here at the weights. She ran a slick time in her last-start win at this track.
KATELETTE is back in her right class after getting well beaten in a Saturday Class 3 at Eagle Farm. She has a claim here and this race should be run to suit her style.
SELECTIONS: NO 3 MAJELLA MAGIC, NO 1 BACHELOR HEIR, NO 6 SWEET REPEAT, NO 5 KATELETTE.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 6 SWEET REPEAT.
